AUCKLAND DEFEAT HAWKE'S BAT. (By Tcleeraph—Press Association.) . Auckland, July 28. ' The first interprovincial match under Northern League rules was played hero yesterday. It ended in Auckland defeating Hawke's Bay by 26 points to 8, and retaining possession of tho Northern Union Cup. In the early stages tho game was keen and fast. Hawke's Bay wero the first to score, with a penalty-goal, but Auckland soon'evened up matters, and for the remainder of the spell had the better of the contest. After tho spell Hawke's Bav livened up considerably, and scored their first try. The local representatives, however, came again, and, notwithstanding valiant efforts on the part of the visitors to send up points, they only got one more try, wliil.e Auckland ran out winners with a margin of 26 points to 8. Auckland showed far more condition than Hawke's Bay, and the win was merited. Hawke's Bay will play AVaikato on ■Wednesday, Thames on Thursday, and Wanganui on Saturday.
