ORGAN RECITAL.

On account of the inclement weather it was a very small audience which was present at the Town Hall on Saturday levelling to hear Mr. . Maughan Barnett on the organ. The programme was fairly attractive, and well diversified. It included Bach's "Fugue in G," one of the brightest of the master's works. Following this was a transcription of part of the music of the first act of "Tannhnuser" (Wagner), the scene where the erring Tnnnhausor, having left the allurements of Vemisborg behind, comes upon a sweet shepherd lad piping to his flocks, and carolling in the cestacy of youth, at which point a band of .pilgrims pass on their way- to Koine. The organ, great as are its resources, is hardly capable of portraying the beauty and orchestral colour of this exquisite scene, but it convoys an idea of it very well, particularly the pastoral atmosphere.- The city organist also played the dainty "Gavotte." from ■■Jlignoir" (Thomas), a Sonata in C Sharp Minor by Basil -Harwood, and We-lv's Pastorale and March in E Plat. Mrs. Lillian Edmonds, a powerful soprano, sans; "0 Mio Fcrnandi, the well-known aria from Donizetti's "La Favourita," but was rather handicapped by the . pronounced echo in the empty hall. She also sang hnJlivnn s charming song, *'Mv Dearest Heart.- .Mr. Horace Hunt played her accompaniments.
