RAILWAY TIME-TABLE ADVERTISING!
Sir,—Would it not .be possible for. tho Railway Department to .print in the daily newspapers an iritolligible. tiine-tablo' of the Ijpper Hutt-Wellington train's on. race days and ..holidays/.'stating..'exactly., what trains are' to run,'and.., tho"',tyries a,t which they. will leave. the.'..different--- sia- • tions? The present leaflets issued \ by : the Department canuot bo.made out with-, out a great mental effort, and a comparison between the leaflet and the book timetable, which ono does not.wish to carry about on short journeys. The leaflet reminds one of the reflections of'a comic opera i man with his "Brndshaw"—"Tho 10.22} p.m. train from Kaiwarra will leave 21. imnutea later, and will not stop at Ngahauranga except for cattle only!' and such like. Really, there are some things just as funny in the railway leaflet in connection with the recent races. For,| ■ instance, we are told that on .Tilly 17 certain tickets "will bo obtainable only by tho trains, which'leave Uastei-ton at 7.30 and 8.45."' This is ji slight upon all other • trains. '- If one train can obtain a ticket,, .why. should another train; if it has tho money, not be able to buy a ticket?-. This is a democratic country. Then why debar' intending travellers from getting tickets? Surely in a free and independent country if a train can obtain a ticket, a. passenger should'be allowed the same privilege! Moreover, it is to be hoped tho tickets ohtained by theso trains will not be charged up to any other trains. I believe a new Traffic Inspector has boon appointed. I wonder if he will bo nble to run' his subnrban service to a time-table? Surely, passengers from such stations as Heretaunga, which bring in a large and' increasing revenue to the Department, should know when the trains, arrive and depart.l.".Tlie',iie\v'W«a'-.w,il.V; also, I hope, lie. jiblc.td get;, some,, fiftli--form schoolboy to ilraw up a concise statement in tabulated form showing tlie-ac-tual running of the-trains on race days and holidays, It could be done in half the space, and 100 per cent, clearer, than it is done in tho present amusing but unintelligible leaflet. For more than 20 years trains havo been running to the Upper Hutt, and We have not yet got a schedule time-table for tho various stations!—l am, etc., PUZZLED, BUT AMUSED.
