Smnuel Lover's poom, "Shanuis O'Brien," was the subject of a splendid dramatic film under that title. Shninus is "wanted" by the police, and a large reward is offered for Ins capture, lie is in love with a pretty girl, who knowing his plight, does all sho can to conceal his hiding plnce. A villain who is despised by tha villagers, hears that Shannis is to attend a dance. Having in mind the large reward he informs the- police, who aro led to the dancing hall by tho villain. Shnnius hides in Iho building, and the captain of tho police, unablo to find him, says that he will dauco with the prettiest colleen present, sho being Shamus's sweetheart. She refuses to dance, and struggles to free herself from tho embrace of tho enptain. Her struggles are witnessed by Shnmiis, who rushes in and knocks the policeman down. He escapes, but soon after is arrested, add is tried, and sentenced to death. Meanwhile Father Miilono hears of Shamus's plight, and plans with tho community for his escape. Tho girl and her mother wait in a boat ready to bo rowed "off to a waiting ship, while Shnmus makes his escape, and sails with his sweetheart for America. Tho villain of tho neco is dealt with by the villngers. "Tha ioad Agent's Love" is finite a good drama, in which Fate takes nn important part. A comic which created considerable laughter was "Dnpin goes Mountaineering. "Making Golf Clubs," shows clearly the manufacture of the clubs. The programme, includes "Tho Spring Round Up," "Bobby the Gay Old Spark," "Tho Ones Who Suffer" and a number of others. . THE NEW THEATRE. A complete change of programme will be introduced to-dny and 10-uiglit at tho continuous pictures at the New Theatre, Manners Street. Prominent among the new scries is tho Cincs drama "The Wandering Minstrel," a beautifuljy-staged and interesting historic play. The Champion Company • will be represented by lhe Aviator's Success," a twentieth century episode. The remaining items include "The Chinese Smuggler" (Bison exelusive drama); "The Yarn of the Nancy cell (a grotesque Edison skit), r, Tho Midnight Ghost" (Ambrosio drama), and "Dupm Seeks a Situation." The new pictures will be shown from 11 a.m. till 11 o'clock to-mght. .Messrs. MacMahon and Donnelly announce that, commencing next Monday, they will present a romantic pic-ture-story, "Love in tho Tropics," by tho wordisk Company. The principals aro a young English tea-plunter, Profnla, a beautiful Indian maid, and Violet Barry, o, charming young English woman.
, THE KING'S THEATRE. '■In addition to the star picture—"Tho Sergeant's Daughter"—a number of new films were sJiown at the King's Theatre last night. Tho performance was a benefi,t for tho Lacrosse Association, and the theatre was'well filled. A scenic picture which created a good deal of interest was "lemples of Kyoto, Japan." It is tho work of a Japaneso firm, and some exceptionally good scenes are depicted, especially those of tho sun setting-. "Gerona" is the title of a scenic picture which takes on around that town, in Spain. Two young men and a young girl aro tho principals in a dramatic study entitled "Love and Silence." The men are invited to a danco by the girl's father (their employer), and while on, their way to-their host's residence an old man is knocked down by their motor. James Walton decides to seo the old man home, and tells his friend, Charles Moffet to go on to the danco. On arrival the latter meets his employer's daughter, falls in love, with her, and becomes engaged. James arrives, and is surprisd at the announcement, and becomes strangely silent. Two years later :Jamesj"an(J-Charles, who is noir married, aro going out to the races, and whilo on their way Charles ininres a finger, and James, lends him a handkerchief. The following clay their employor finds that a robbery has been committed, and calls in the police, who on going into tho strongroom find James's handkerchief. Ho silently admits that he is guilty, and is sentenced to a term of imprisonment. Meanwhile tho conscience of tho real thief (Charles) gets to work, and eventually he is reduced to a very weak state of health. On being released, James sends a congratulatory message to Charles and his wife. James's release comes as a shock to Charles, who in his languid state of health dies. Prior to his death ho writes » confession to his wife, who, on hearing the truth, - goes'to see James. ,The picture graphically delineates tho closing scenes. Other good pictures are: "Marriage in the Reign of Louis XV" (drama), "Love Me, Love. My Dog" (comic), and "Love Finds a Way (comic).
SHORTT'S THEATRE. Yesterday's change of programme at bhortrs Theatre was responsible for packed audiences during the night sessions. The star items were "Arson at Sea" and The Secret of the Miser's Cave." The former shows the owner conspiring with tho captain to destroy the vessel at,sea. One of the crew finds the agreement between the captain,and the owner to destroy the ship, and immediately taxes the. captain in regard to his foul purpose. Tho captain waits till the crew are'asleep, and then sets fire to the ship, takes to tho boat, and leaves the crew to its fate. Then follows the magnificent spectacle of a ship burning at sea, the efforts of the crew to escape, and the ultimate destruction of the ship. The captain eventually reaches land, and receives his reward, but he is filled with remorse, and his ill(,'otton gaius prove his undoing. "The Secret of tho Miser's Cave" is one of the best pictures yet produced by the Kalem Co. Persistent efforts are made to find the miser's hoard, but without success.' After many years a young man, while being pursued by outlaws, takes refuge in a cave. Tho outlaws, in order to prevent his escape, throw boulders down from the hillside, coniplotely blocking the entrance. In order to escape, he digs his way through what appears to be a brickedup doorway, but which ovcntually proves to be the secret entrance to the cave. Other pictures of note are "An Excursion to Kabylln," a beautifully coloured scenic showing the world-fumed hot-snrings and terraces; "The Marriage of Billy," an extremely laughablo comedy, "Making Getas (boots) in .Tapafl." ' This week's Gaumont Graphic is of more than usnal interest, the principal items being "The Costers' Derby." "Serious Firo in New York," "Opening of the Coaching Club in Hyde Park." "Dog Show at Wandsworth," "The Cruiser Melbourne," "Luna Park," and "Tho Transport Workers' Strike in London.'' A picture of great.interest to footballers is the North and South'lsland match at Napier on July 13.: The' present programme will bo screened tordav uml to-morrow. Tim theatre is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 'ME A DELPHI. To-night tho Adolphi Masked Male Quartette are announced to again appear. The number chosen this week is that very old favourite, "Oil, Who Will O'er the Downs So Free," and should be well received. The pictures being screened this wrek a.ro of the usual high standard. "Charlie Colms and the Knave nf Spades," although a very long film, running to over 2500 fret, does not allow one's interest to Hag for a moment'. Tliero arc no fewer than forly-four scenes, and each ono appears to bo more exciting than its predecessor. Other subjects of much,interest and amusement are: "Wild Birds at Home" (a Nature study, beautifully coloured), "A Western Kimona" (n cowboy story full of comedy), and tho. invariably: good anil "Patlio Gazette."
