WHISKY AND RUM. Rotorua, July 25. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Mr, Dyoi investigated charges of broaching a cask of whisky consigned to Oruanui, on the Mokai-Putiaruru railway. George. , Brown, etoreninn, was sentenced to three tronths , imprisonment. On. a charge of> supplying a, Maori with liquor, he wae fined .£25, in default three months, concurrent with the previous tenn. ICahu Mahi was also convicted of stealing rum from a cask, the property of his employer, foi whom lie was carting. A fine of 'JEIQ, and £2 15s. 9(1. costs was imposed. RAILWAY APPEAL BOARD. . Dunedin, July 25.« The elective members of the South Island Railway Appeal Board have given their decision in favour of Messrs. G, Burnett (Dunedin) and J. Young church), who appealed recently against being superseded on the classification list, hut the chairman of the board (Mr. Haseldon) dissents from their finding. Tho finding will bo forwarded to the Minister in the usunl course. RAILWAY MANAGEMENT; Chrlstchurch, July 25. At a meeting of tho Aldington branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway , ' Servants'the-following motion was catried unanimously: "This branch is opposed to any proposal to import a so- ' called expert from abroad at a high salary to manngo the New Zealand Railways and would urge upou the Executive Council the necessity for resisting this proposal to the utmost if iny attempt is made by those in authority to carry ifc : into effect." 'It was further resolved bo communicate with all other branches < throughout tho Dominion asking for their ' support. . THE BOAR'S ATTACK. Timaru, July 25. The inquest on the body of Harry Riddle, aged CO, was opened and adjourned to-day, to allow tho police to obtain , movo evidence. It was shown that when.' deceased was found ho had been dead from sixteen to twenty-four hours, in a slaughteryard, with his thigh ripped open, it is supposed by a savage boar, and that ho died from loss of blood. THE JOKE TO HIS MOTHER. . Dunedin, July 25. William M'lntyre, aged 19 years, who was fined ten shillings for failing.to attend a. parade, appeared before the Court ■ this morning on a judgment summons. 110 pleaded inability to pay, but said lie would not deny that he might have said to his mother in ;i joko that ho would. sooner go to gaol than pay. Ho confess- , ed to having a grudge against the service tlirough not having obtained a prize duo to him when a volunteer. M'lntyro an- : nounccd that he would not pay the fine , cheerfully. About 9 o'clock this morning Arthur , Somorville, a young man who camo from Middleiuarch a few days ago, jumped from ths wharf into the bay, having previously loaded his pockets with stones. Hβ wjis rescued by a boatman, and appeared . at the Police Court later on. Tho police ' stated that he had explained hiR rash conduct by 6tating that he could not sleep, had lost his will power, and had lost his religion. He was remanded for a week, during which time lie will be placed under medical observation. SERIOUS ACCIDENT. lnvercarnill, July 25. A serious accident occurre'd on the tramway to-day. Alexander Kelly, building contractor, when riding a motor-cycle, • collided with a tramcar, ancPwas badly injured. He lies at the hospital in a critical condition.

Wright, manager of tho Town Hall Picture Company, was fined £2 and costs to-day for promoting a lottery, disposing 6f real property by moans of a ticket.
