Mr. Oohiisflnsiwctnr of Awards), when prosecuting h. llickolo, restaurant-keeper, Auckland, before Mr. G. C. Kettle, S.M., yesterday for breach of tho Act in that lie failed to keep a wages and overtimebook. The Inspector of Awards, in evidence, stated that he had called at the restaurant, and asked to see defendant's timo nnd wages-book. It had not been produced, but had been shown to him at a later date. He would call two employe* to pvove that the book had been purclinscd after his first visit, nnd the entries put in before his second visit. It would bo seen by reference to ttie book that a v,: i ; - lake had been rnade in its compilation, r> = the employees in -question were stive.i credit for having worked, a week bofoit , their engagement commoneed, while His' last, week of their employment hnd been forgotten. At this stage council for defendant intimated that lie would plead guilty, and the employees were not culled upon to give evidence. A fine of .£2O was imposed, the. magistrate stating that tho nftence was a very serions one indeed. Evidence had been manufactured for the purpose of deceiving the inspector, and therefore it was n ca-o for an exemplary fino.
