Vice-Regal. The following lunched with their Excellencies Lord and Lady Islington on Wednesday:—Tho Primate of New Zealand (Bishop Neville, of Dunediu), Bishop Crossley (Auckland), and Bishop Sprott (Wellington). The Bishop of Melanesia lunched with their Excellencies yesterday. Lord and Lady Islington attended the performance oi "Ben Hur" at the Opera House last evening. This evening the Gov'eruor will be present at a concert (o be given at the Missions to Seamen, and on Wednesday next will officiate at tho opening of the Missions to Seamen's bazaar.
The Bishop of Melanesia (Dr. Wood) trill leave for Sydney to-day. While in Sydney he will Iμ the guest of Lord Ciicimsford, iuid on July/ 31 ho sails for Norfolk Island. Thn health of the Von. Archdeacon Brodie, of Auckland, is causing the greatest anxiety among his many triends. Tho Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long-ser-vice Medal has been awarded to Captain J. L. Ching, Tenth (Nelson) Mounted Mines, whose total ■ service, aggregates 20 years and 183 days. Captain C. F. Thornton (Reserve of Officers, Wiltshire Regiment), at present at tached to General Headquarters at Wellington, has resigned his commission in cue >i«w. Zealand btaif Corps. Mr. W..J. Prouse is gazetted vice-consul for Uruguay at Wellington. Police Inspector John Dwyer, of DuneJ o ?' TV" 11 appointed inspector of the bchool of Anatomy in that city* Mr- W. W. de Castro has been appoint ed District Land Registrar at Invercareill. He has been succeeded at Nelson by Mr. Wm. Johnston. Mr. J. A. Frascr has wen appointed to the sanle duties at Gisborne, and Mr. Walter Hielop becomes Registrar at Napier. The remains.of the late Tramway-Con-S 0^ r -n F i J, f ancock ' frlio was accidentally killed on Monday last while on duty were interred in Karori Cemetery yesterday. Ihe funeral was attended by a large following of tho deceased's comrades in the tramway service, the procession being beaded by the Tramways Band, whicH played the "Dead March" and "Tho Garland of Flowers" en route to tho burial place.
The annual meeting of the Overseas Club (Wellington branch) is to bo held on a date yet to be arranged next month. His Excellency the Governor is being asked to preside. Mr. 0. G. Meredith, of llaslerton, leaves on a trip to Sydney by the Maunganui today. News has been received from Melbourne that Mr. Reynolds Dennistou, of the Pliin-tner-Dennistou Comedy Co., is still confined to his bed in Kalgoorlie, and 'that it is feared that his heart is affected as tho result of the severe illness he has been suffering from. It is doubtful if he will bo able to rejoin tho company for the New Zealand tour in September. Mr. W. Barclay has resigned his position as a member of tho Otago Harbour Board. In addition to giving energetic service in that position lor over twenty years, Mr. Barclay was chairman for several years. It is stated in shipping circles (says the Dunedin "Star") that his resignation is largely due to his disagreement from the board's policy. That, however, may be no more than idle gossip. It is thought that Mr; T. Scollay, a member of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, who just missed a seat at the last election, will be appointed by the Government to the vacancy. / Mr. C. A. Piper has arrived from Dunedin to assume his new duties as Traffio Manager of the Railways of the North Island;. Mr. H. Ai Reid, dairy inspector, leaves Auckland for Sydney on Monday next; en route for England. At the Magistrate's Courthouse yesterday, Mr. W. Hill, who is leaving the "Evening Post" ,to take up a position on the Auckland "Herald," was presented by the Bench, the Bar, and the law-re-portine pressmen with a fountain-pen. Dr. M r Arthur, S.M.,'and Mr. T. M. Wilford in terms of praise of Mr. Hill, and wished him success in the future.
