WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the 'Wellington Harbour Board was held last night. There were present: Messrs. R. Fletcher (chairman), C. E. Danicll, A. MacFarlane, J. C. C'obbe, J. E Fitzgerald, J. Trevor, W.. T. Hildreth, C. WT Jones, It. C. Renner, and P. C. Frec-th. FINANCE. The bank pass-books showed a credit balance to current acoount of ,£-11,821; to Imprest account, ,£1113; and on fixed deposit .£70,000. The payments for interest, sinking fund, accounts and wages amounted to i' 33,265, for progress payments on contracts ,£1877, and for salaries. .£783. The chairman reported that as provided for in tho agreement of September 21, 1908, between the Wellington Harbour Board and tho Miramar Borough Council, tho council had paid the second of five annual payments of ,£IOOO, as subsidy in connection with tho hoard's works at Miramar. , Ho reported also that tho tender of Mr. W. T. Quinton had been accepted for uniforms for the board's oflic'er.3 for tho year ending June 30, 1013, and tho tender of Messrs. Charles Hill and Sons had teen accepted for the supply of caps. It wits decided to fix 11 a.m., Friday, September G, 1912, as the time and date for public drawing at the board's offices of twenty ,£IOO debentures, part of the board's JE850,000 consolidated loan, for redemption on February 28, 1013. MOTOR-LORRIES. The Wharves and Accounts Committee recommended the board to call for tenders for two motor-lbrries for the carriage of goods for transhipment over the wharves. The estimated cost was atoftt ,£2OOO. Tho voting oh tho proposal was equal, and it was rejected On tho casting voto of tho chairman. NEW BY-LAWS. It . was resolved to mako tlie following amending by-laws:— (a) Fixing the transhipment rate for manures, guano, phosphates, etc., at 2s. 3d. per ton. (b) Fixing transhipment rates for timber— Hal'dwoods at' 4s. 2d. per ton; other timber at 3s. per ton. ■ (c) Exempting frozen fish for local Consumption from payment of inward wharfage' mr: haricness's charges • Owing to tho absencfe from tho Dominion of Mr. J. G. Harknes3, who, at the June Board meeting, made certain' statements impugning the efficiency of the administration and tho staff,-tho matter of further consideration of tho charges made was postponed until llr. Harkness should return. Mr. Harkness has-gone to Vancouver on business : connected with tho National Dairy Association, and ho will bo absent for about nine weeks. There was ■ some discussion as to whether the motion should be allowed to lapse, but most of the members, and especially tlie chairman, said that tho charges made were of such a serious nature that in justice to tho board's staff they could not be allowed to rest uninvestigated. It was'therefore decided that in fairness to tho officers and to Air. Harkness, the matter should be postponed.
