CEMENT CARGOES AGAIN.
NEW DEMANDS MADE. There is further trouble ahead regarding cement cargoes. The latest demand by the Waterside Workers' Union proposes to endeavour to further obviate the dust nuisance if possible. On May 22, 1912, an agreement was entered into between the Watersido Workers' Union and the Nelson Portland Cement Company, New Zealand Portland Cement Company. Milburn Lima and Cement Company, Golden Bay Cement Company, by which double lined bags were to bo used. Now comes a demand by which tho onus ' of preventing dust is thrown back upon the manufacturers. "Regarding imported cement," tho letter states, "tho samo is to Ixs contained in zinc, tin, or galvanised iron-lined casks. Shipowners and shipping agents are' requested, 'in order to avoid friction,' to refuse' to accept as freight imported coment unless packed in terms of the agreement entered into with the New Zealand cement manufacturers." T'lio watersido workers throughout New Zealand, according to the letter, are determined to comply with the coinnact. and will refuse to unload from ships' holds foreign cements unless packed as requested. The new regulation is proposed to come into force on July I, 1913.
