Mr. acholes (couuty chairman) urged tho adoption of the subsidy system of grants. Settlers prepared to help themselves should be assisted. Mr. Boitdie iulvoentcd that tho main road should .bo pushed through. No district in the Dominion required such a. largo expenditure as the .king Country, owing bo the great expan«?»of settlement. It was ill tho interest ot the, country that an activo roadiiic policy should lie adopted. i Mr. Fraspr said much depended 'upon the amount placed at his disposal for ex. pendituro. He had seen sufficient of the state of tho district to impress on him tho urgent need for roads. He could not say" anything as to the policy of the Governmcnt at present, but all the work undertaken would lie put through on economical lnws. Ho.could, not help thinking that much nioncv had been wasted in tho past through delay in installing, also insufficient supervision. It appeared to bo- a cheap method to push through- a great amount of formation to open up the country; but really it was wasteful, as much ; S, W ' la 'l to done again before metalling. Every pound saved meant a pound extra put on the roads. ]1 0 intended after Parliament rose to go through tho country and make himself acquainted with the needs of every district. He wasnot a niflu of many words, and preferred to bo judged by what h* accompli*,. the Minister' attended"a. banquet tonight. Ho will return to "Wellington by tho 2 a.m. express.
