' ' DOES WHALING PAY? The Norwegian whaler Campbell, which has been cruising in the vicinity of Stewart Island for sovcral weeks past, arrived at Port Clmlmers on Saturday, last. Cap* tain Ellefsen, her commander, stated that only two whales wero seen in three weeks, and one—a medium-sized one—was captured. In order to make the venture payable, Captain Ellefsen said that five such fish would require to be captuved daily. The Campbell cost between £5000 and £6COO, and the sister vessel, which his brother commanded, and which is a.t present down at Stewart Island getting rtfady for whal- , ing, cost a, similar sum. Tho wind howled all 1 day long, heavy showers of rain fell, and, an augry sea rose and broke at tho Heads. These conditions consequently had some effect on ships' movements. ' The Stormbird left port during the day for Blenheim, but was compelled to return, owing to stress of weather. The Mapourika sailed at 4.45 p.m. for Nelson and West Coast ports, ,bu.t was unablo to "face it," and so returned to Worsor Bay, where she anchored for the night. The Mararoa left for Lyttelton at' 8.30 p.m., and cleared the Head 3at 9.10 p.m. At a late hour last night the weather at tho Heads was clearing, a moderate sea was prevailing, but tho wind was still fresh.
