BAD SMASH. MOTOR AND TRAMCAES. Auckland, July 22, A startling collision between a motoN ear and two tramcars occurred this evening, l>y which Mr. Ferguson, a visitor irom tircymouth, .had one hand severely crushed. The cor was driven by the owner (Mr. Percy Kingswell), who passed in front of tho tram towards tho right. The driver failed to notice tho tranicar coming in tho opposite direction, aid tho automobile struck it. Tho impact threw tho motor back in front of tho other car again, and it was knocked off to tho side of tho road. Mr. Ferguson was' thrown' out, tho other occupant' being badly shaken. Mr. Ferguson had his thumb amputated, and may. loso the hand. The motor was badly damaged. CARRIED OUT TO SEA. LOSS OF LIFE ON LAUNCH. ,> ... Waimatc, July 22. A sad drowning acoident occurred at tho mouth of the Waihao River on Sunday afternoon. Three young men, named Kirkcaldy, Duncan, and Adams,- owners of a motor launch, went "for a sail, when tho engmo of tho.launch stopped, mid a strong current carried tho launch towards tho outlet. Two of the occupants jumped out to swim ashore, but both, wero carried out to sea and drowned. Jurkca!dy a body was recovered on 'Sunday evening, but Duncan's has not v o t been washed up. Adams remained in tho boat, and got on the highest part, and when tho boat was passing ah outlet box he caught hold of the box and drew himself ashore, and was thus saved. Tho launch was washed out to sea. ~ LICENSEE'S RESPONSIBILITY. Palmcrston, July 22. Mr. Thomson, S.M., delivered judgment to-day in a case in which .William J. White, of White's Hotel, Foxton, was sued as licensee for permitting the sale of i liquor to a Native. Tho sale -was made by the barmaid to tho alleged Tohunga Hingawata Tuparoa, concerned in a certain other case, whilo While wns absent from Foxton. Tho' barmaid had' already been fined' £o and costs on two charges, and tho magistrate now .hold that tho licensee was legally responsible; - - even though the rale was made against his orders, and fined him .12' and costs' in each of two charges. WONG SUE'S DEATH. Duncdin, July 22. Wong Sue, a Chinese fruiterer in Stafford Street, was found hanging dead at the back of liis shop this afternoon. Tho discovery was made at 3.30,- but the body was not cut down, and the police wero not informed till about 5 o'clock. It is stated that the deceased had been gambling heavily lately. ■ ' • THE SHIRKERS, Auckland, July 22, Thirteen youths, charged with 'failing to render military service at Onohunga, wero fined in sums ranging from £2 to is. Oamaru, July 22. T. P. Welsh, a Territorial, was fiued £1 and costs for failing-to render personal service. At an inquest on Saturday on tho bod> of a man found in tho Domain, the body was identified as that of Hugh. Beattio, who had lived for the past three years on the Nokomai Goldfields as Hugh Ward. Ho had 1 'assumed his : uncle's surname. Medical ovidenco disclosed tho fact that the main artery and muscles inside the left elbow had been completely 'severed, death resulting from haemorrhage. A verdict .was returned to tho effect that death was the result of haemorrhage from a wound self-inflicted while deceased was mentally depressed. The following unsigned message was found scratched on a tin tobacco-box on tho body of deceased:—"Ma-Merman.—l leave you the claim. Nothing to live for. I am dono. Am a liar all my life. Mrs. Sriwood can bury me if she and Peters like my will. Love when we meet. Died mad about 5 n.m. Saturday. For the best. Look well. You can dissect my body or bury rue. Thanks." VEGETABLE REFUSE IN RIVERS, Palnwston North, July 22. _ A largo deputation, of' flax and dairy interests is to wait on the Prime Minister ! to-morrow to ask for legislative relief in | connection with injunctions to be granted under a judgment by the Chief Justice in the Pcareo cases, preventing flaxmillers from letting vegetable refuse run into rivers, and in which tho Chief Justice stated that oven water of different qvality mil in would mean pollution. It iB claimed that this prevents drainage from dairy factories or ilaxmills, even though I tho matter was in itself inoffensive, and, in such case, will seriously cripple theso industries.
