During the naval manoeuvres the lleot under Vice-Admiral l'rince Louis of Battenburg defeated Vice-Admiral Sir Georgo Callaglian's attacking fleet. Prince Louis of Battenburg's fleet outnumbered the enemy two-to-one, but Sir George C'allaghan succeeded in landing thirty thousand imaginary troops on the coast of Yorkshire. The attacking fleet broke through the North Sea cordon, and also -preyed on Atlantic commerce. It lost six battleships, two cruisers, and the greater part of its mosquito flotilla. l'rince Louis of Battenburg's loss was two cruisers and twenty-four mosquito vessels. ARMED MERCHANTMEN. Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, in a letter to the press, emphasises the'necessity of securing Britain's food supply against panic by the establishment of granaries and the equipment of certain merchantmen on the trade routes with guns and trained gunners. Increased garrisons and armaments are also needed at Malta ond Gibraltar, and in Egypt, and (ho reinforcement of the existing: active fleet at out-points is recommended. Admiral Beresford slates that only 123, out of the 223 ships engaged in tho present manoeuvres are Tcally efficient for an emergency. He urges the maintenance of a strong Mediterranean fleet and a force of cruisers ou tho trades routes. The efficiency of the overseas help, the letter adds, cannot be estimated until it is known what form of help the Dominions will select.
