HUMANE SLAUGHTERING
,A GERMAN METHOD. 'penumstrations (says "Chambers's Journal") are being carried out by tho Council of Justice to Animals with a new slaughtering system,^-which has tho recommendation of being instantaneous, clean, simple, and efficient. The instrument consists of a small weapon resembling a pistcil, carrying a steel bolt, which to the barrel, awl which is 'discharged by a small smokeless-powder cartridge. The muzzle of the weapon is placed upon the forehead cir the back of tho head of tho animal to be killed, according to whether it is a bullock, pig, or sheep, and tho trigger is pulled. The discharge fives the bolt into tho brain of tho animal, killing it instantly, and after completing its work the missile returns to the muzzle. The instrument requires no skill in its manipulation beyond tho close pi-assure of the muzzle against- the animal's head in tho most vulnerable position.' The report on firing is very slight, and. thero is little chance of a mis-, firo or accident. Unless the muzzle is pressed against the bedy 'it cannot possiblv inilict anv injury; while, should the "slaughterer slip or the animal move its lread. during the operation, there is no danger of a bullet ricocheting to inflict'damage upon any persons in the vicinity. The council above-named are carrying cut an active campaign to demonstrate and urge the_ employment of this' simple method, winch lias been m vogiio for some timel in Germany as a substitute for. the primitive and uncertain poleaxing or tho use of a bullet. The weapon is made in two sizes, the larger far cattle and pigs, the small for calves, sheep, dogs, etc.
