She hail, for Hie last six weeks, been living in a boardinghouso in Hobart Street, and, towards eleven o'clock tliis inornrn;> informed another ot' the occupants of the place that she had taken lysol some time earlier. At once the. lady of the house had emetics procured, and rang up Dr. Hope. Alter the administration of the emetics and of other remedies, under the doctor's supervision, the sufferer was removed to the hospital There is hope for her recovery. She is a young woman ot about twenty years of age. TIRED OF FEDERATION. Greymouth, July 20. Tho Brunncr Minors' Union, by 43 to 20,. decided to withdraw from the Federation of Labour. Reefton, July 21. At the annual meeting ot the Miners' Union last night the present president was re-elected. A competition for the secretaryship ensued, Mr. J. Collier "opposing Jlr. 31. Pagan. It is understood a motion ordering a secret ballot, with a view to seceding from the Federation of Labour was lost on the voices. One hundred and fifty-fivo members are on lock-out pay.
DISCHARGED FROM CUSTODY. Gisborne, July 20. Confirmation having been obtained of the divorce against John Thomas Stone, arrested on a charge of wife desertion, he was discharged to-day. When the divorce was obtained the warrant for his arrest was not cancelled.
FARM INTERESTS. Timaru, July 21. The executive of the South Canterbury Farmers'-Union yesterday discussed tbu question of accident insurance' for farm employees. The present arrangements are considered unsatisfactory. Delegaies to the. New' Zealand conference were iuslructcd to support the Slate making suitable provision, and also to bring up tlio undesirablenoss of-the present law requiring immigrants to possess a certain amount.of ready money (a single man JUII and a man with a family ,£ls), as this must.prevent many suitable men from coining here. The executive is maturing a plan lo bring out domestic servants. CAMP TIME AND FARMING. Timaru, July 21. At a meeting oS South Canterbury farmers on Saturday it was resolved that the North Canterbury branch of tho union be asked (o complete- (ho arrangements which are being made for a meeting of farmers on August 21, to confer with General Godley, as to the most suitable time for camps as affecting farm industries.
GUARD CAUGHT BY TRUCKS. Christchurch, July 21. James Currari, 12 years of ago, a guard on Saturday evening's train from Asttburton to Christchurch, met with a rather serious accident whilst shunting trucks at Islington. As the trucks were in motion, Curran got jammed between two, -nd sustained considerable injuries to his chest. He was taken to the hospital, and this afternoon his condition was reported to be satisfactory. - ' THE WOOL-SALE CONDITIONS. Auckland, July 21. A member of the Auckland Woolbrokers' Association told a reporter yesterday that the new conditions under which wool sales were to bo conducted in Wellington had been in operation in Auckland at all sales last season. They had been agreed upon by the associations in the different centres after a great deal of consultation with buyers, and would, it was believed, be found lo be a very suitable and fair set of conditions, satisfactory both to buyers and brokers. .AFFAIR WITH A REVOLVER. Dunedin, July 21. Harry Hamer, aged 19, employed at the Phoenix Factory,. was received into the hospital yesterday suffering from a bullet wouud in tho thigh. Hamer and his mate wero having revolver practice at the butts and tho latter, understanding that he had fired his last shot, turned his revolver, the remaining bullet lodging in Hamer's thigh. The wouud is not serious. , THE BAILLIE PICTURES. Dunedin, July 21. The Baillie collection of British paintings is attracting visitors from the country, as well as in town. Mr. Baillie is expected to return from Qiieenstowu tonight, and, in all probability, some purchases for Dunedin will be concluded this week. A wish is expressed by some to acquire "The Brig o' Daon—a large oil-painting by George Houston. GORE FATALITIES. Gore, July 20.
The body of the man found dead in the Domain yesterday has been identified as that of Hugh Ward, a well-known miner at Xokomai. A medical examination disclosed severance of the main artery of the left, arm, sufficient to cause death. Mr. Wm. Trembath, livery slablekoeper, and a resident of Gore, died suddenly this morning from runture of a blood vessel on the brain. He was 57 years of age. Deceased was father of W. F. Trembath, of athletic fame. ' BRIEF MENTION. Dunedin, July 20. There was heavy frost last night. The weather generally is delightful. Gisborne, July 20. Patrick Wallace, a Wniapu County employee, was drowned yesterday while attempting to cross a flooded river at Teararoa. The body has not been recovered.
