The Hon. J. A. Millar will probably leave Wellington for Kotorua on Wednesday. His health continues to improve, but the duration of his stay at Rotorua is uncertain. The Hon. E. Mitchelson (Auckland), who has been ill for some weeks, is now making speedy progress towards recovery. Tho Bishop of Melanesia was welcomed at Auckland yesterday afternoon, the Town Hall being packed. The Bishop, in tho course of an eloquent address, appealed to tho public for funds for tho purchase of motor boats in order that the missionere might be able to cover ground more quickly, and thus do a greater and better work on tho mission lield.—Press Association. Our Feilding correspondent states that tho Government has appointed Mr. Fred Pirani its representative on tlio Feilding Fire Board, vice Mr. Pleasants, who has left the district. Mr. Pirani was formerly chairman of the board. Mr. T. K. Triipe, accountant in. the Wellington office of the Union Steam Ship Company, left on Saturday by the Aorangi on a holiday trip to Papeete. Out of thirty-three applicants, Mr. P. Mansfield, of Wanganui, has (states a Press Association telegram from Hamilton) been appointed engineer to tho Hamilton Borough. Mr. James Bryco, British Ambassador at Washington, has been created a Doctor of Laws by Adelaide University. There was a brilliant gathering.—Press Association. x The Hon. Georgo B. Foster, Canadian Minister for Trade and Commerce, is now on his way to Australia. His mission is to confer with tho Federal Government on the question of reciprocal trade between Australia and Canada. Tho. death, occurred at Mastcrton on Sunday of Mr. Charles Wilton, ono of the earliest settlers in the Wellington province. Tho late Mr. Wilton was 83 years of age, and arrived in Wellington in tho ship Oriental in 1841. Ho served his apprenticeship to tlio grocery business with Messrs. M'jjcatli and Wallace, of Wellington, and subsequently carried on business on his own account on Lambton Quay, Wellington. Ho later embarked in farming, on the Taratahi Plains, afterwards staking a general storo at Ivuripuni. Ho leaves a family of ton, fifty grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.
Mr. Wenzel H. Collie, formerly organist of St, Thomas's Church, Newtown, Ims been appointed organist and choir conductor at Trinity Methodist Church, Newtown. Mr. Collie takes up his new charge next month.
