NEW ZEALAND HEMP. There has bocn an advance of 20s. per ton iu the price' of, New Zealand hemp during the-past few days, the present quotations being £21 per ton f.o.b. Weilii:>jton. The present, price leaves a fair margin.'of. profit''to the miller, ond if maintained for the nsxt Tow weeks it, will result in goner'al- activity at the hemp mJllis: most of them are now'closed down for the winter. ,Th 3 advance is no doubt largely due to the fact that the American wheat' , crop is exceptionally larcc. According" to a cable messags published yesterday,'the N.orth-West prospect is for tho greatest crop in history. If tl'is is Correct, nnd there is no reason for doubting the •.accuracy of the, statement, although it emanates from American sources, tho consumption of binder twine imwt bo abnormal, and manufacturers' reserves must he running low. It is very probable that the presant demand for New Zealand hemp arises from 'the fact that manufacturers miiet replcu-i-Ci stoclv- If this view of the position is anywhere near correct, our hemp should at least maintain its price for tome time to come, but 'tie probability is that there will be a, farther slight, advance. Manila hemp and sisal are strong .pomnetitors. but unless supplies of those fibres an extensive, they will not interfcrj with the upward trend of prices. .- ' ■

Mr. I. Wien?r. writing to the "Economist" l.Londonl of Jur.j I,'sa.v?:—"The nrioo of every commodity >s governed nlmast exclusively by a sot of conditions of supply and demand and cost of production entirely iw own, and probably entirely iii- - dependent of the gold supply.. Apart from supply and demand, credit appears the enly determining factor, and for purposes, of. credit every item of wealth in the world, all commodities, all real and psrsonal property—yea, cvon personal character is available. The very moment anything ropreecntfne 'wealth is produced it becomes usable as credit, and practically becomes current coin and a icedium of eschanee er;uat to irold, and the true reason why the Kold supply has little or no influence on. prices of commodities appears to be that, compared with the enormous amount of wealth in the world increasing'daily, the .increase in the production of sold is very small. Besides, shake credit and prices -will slump at once.
