The first • match foi tins hockey shield to be played in ChristchiiTch took place at Lancaiftr Park this afternoon between teams representing Auckland'and Canterbury. ,' The game was played in showery ■weather, and the ground was' in a very bad condition owing to the recent heavy rein. ( : >. ■ . ■■ -. • ■ From the "bully off" Canterbury were soon on the attack, but some fine play by Porter and-Speight kept tho ball well out of the circle. Auckland , obstructed twice in .succession, ..and thus gave the Reds a chance,..but Shell hit too hard, and .1 "twenty-five", resulted. Keeping up tho attack, Harrington l headed a rush, but Patrick was. penalised for off-side ■ play. From the free-hit Mason received tho ball, and passed to Maboiiey, but Diiffiold relieved;.. Auckland, had a good chance fehortly after but Reynolds was penalised foi offjside play. Even play followed until Throp ran up the field, and centred to Harrington, but tho hitter's shot went wide. Green centred to Harrington, but Jacobsen relieved splendidly. From another shot, Allen< saved neatly by kicking out. The Blues now attacked, butoff-sido ■play spoiled their attempts. Porter was noticeable for some .splendid, play down the line, and received a round of applause. Half-time was called with no score. i Starting again, Canterbury, set up an ! ettack, and aftor some rive-and-take playGreen obtained the ball, and centred to Harrington, who scored.
