CHASED BY A GHOST.
WOMEN FRIGHTENED. UNCANNY KIGUKK AND S'J'RAKGB j .Noisus; , .... (By Tclejraph.-rrcsa Association.! Auckland, July 17. "We're afrnid to gt> home in the'dark,* the girls said tearfully. Apparently they have goud ran-;! to he nervous, for there is »o»io person, according to stories lol<l b,v girls, and there appears to be no reason lo discredit them, who is making.it his foolish busine-sn* lo dress himself iifa sheet and frighten. a number of residents of Kingsland. lie had been seen two"or three times during the last day or two, certainly twice —once on Sunday night, and once early on Holiday evening. Tho girls in question, who havo been brought to tho verge of nervous breakdown,' live • in the vicinity of Commercial lioad, Kingsiand. They, are business girlfe of more thou average intelligence, and there is very littlo likelihood of romaiicc in their experiences. Moreover, reports have been abroad that this person lias ljeen seen in another part of Auckland within, the past week. When asked for their version' of the episodes, one of the girls spoko of what happened on Sunday night. "I must havo neon in bed for somo time," she said, "when I was' suddenly awakened by a noise, and I found a bright light, .shining on my face. Tho blind was up, and (lie light came from outside. I at onco thought of fire, and I jumped out of bed to sco where the flames were. When I. looked through the window, however, 1 saw that the light came from some sort of a lamp, and it moved .backwards as I looked. Then I saw something white moving Ixickwaj'ds too. Of courss I was terrified, and I jumped under tlia clothes as quickly as I could, and lay quivering." ".No," she added, "I didn't tell anyone. I was afraid they would laugh at me, and say I had been dreaming. 1 was sis wide aivnkc then as 1 am now." It was on Monday evening that th« phost—giving him a 11.21110 which is perhaps 100 respectable under the circumstances—succeeded in properly terrifying two other girls, both resilient in School Road, Kingsiand. Both had left their business places shortly before li o'clock, and were walking home along Third Avenue, when they received their fright. "It was about a quarter-past si\," l.h»j told a "Herald" repr< senlalivo. "W« were walking down Third Avenue 10. wards School lioad, and were about to ascend a dark hill when both of lis stopped petrified. A horrible-looking figure in while moved towards us down the hill, It walked in the centre of the road and made strange gurgling noises. Oh, the fright we got. It was to uncanny, anil wo could scarcely move for fear. Both of us must have thought of the same idea, for wo turned and ili>d intj>, tho house of-a friend- near by." ->Tlioj thing in while chased us, but as it approached the lamp it turned aside into a dark gully, evidently not caring to show itself. _ II; was the noise.-) it made which' frightened us more than any thing." " Relatives of the two girls confirmed tha story by the fact that they reached homo in a very nervous and agitated Elate. In view of the unpleasant experieneo related by the girls unother cpiuodo reported from Kingsiand last evening seeun to have some bearing 011 tlioir story. About 9.30 p.m. two residents of the district were standing in tho vicinity of Kingsiand Avenue. Suddenly they wera alarmed to hear two '6r three terrified shrieks, evidently emanating from a woman. They proceeded along the avenit« with the idea of making investigations, but they could neither discover a woman, nor tho cause of the screams; It seems fairly reasonable Ito assume (hat tho "ghost", again made its appearance, nnd the woman probably' then ran airay ter-' rifled.. , Tho police,at Kingsiand were informed early yesterday of" tho reports ■ f th« "ghost's" doings, and last evening Constable Wainhouso inado somo investigations. A person, such 11s this is alway« hard to track, however, ai\d no elm could be found. . I
