OBITUARY.

' A WELL-KNOWN AVIATOR. By Tclesraph—Press Afisociation-CopyrieM Paris, July 16. Mr. Hubert Latham, the well-known 'aviator, whilst hunting in the French Congo, was killed by a buffalo.

Despite Jiis English' name, "Hubert Arthur Charles Latham was very much of a Frenchman. Mr. Latham was born in Paris on January 10, 1883. His family were of English origin, but when he was born' they had been settled in Havre for three generations, marrying Frenchwomen. The Harro Lathams have been well-to-do brokers, merchants in cotton, coffee, and other commodities. After tho ordinary education of a Frenchman of good position, Mr. Latham went to Oxford for one year, and afterwards -went travelling. He visited the Sudan, then returned to France, then went to Africa again, and spent a year in the Sudan and Abyssinia, , getting a good deal of bifr-enmo hunting. In 1908 he took' up aviation, aoid in the summer of 1909 made the first attempt to cross the English Channel in an aoroplane. Ho met wtih a' mishap and fell into tho wuter when eleven miles out from tho coast. Six days later Bleriot made his successful passage, and two days after that Mr. Latham made, another unsuccessful flight from tho French coast, falling into tlio sea near Dover*after he had covered 20 miles of tho distance. During 1910 ■ Mr. Latham broke a number of aeroplane records.

' THE REV. DR. POPE. (Rec. July 18, 1.15 a.m.) London, July 17. . Tho death is announced of tho Rev. llenry John Pope, D.D., a wdl-kriown Wcsleyan Minister, aged 70.

The Rev. H. J. Pops was secretary of Wesleyan. Home Missions for ton years, and previously for 21 years secretary of tlio )Vu»lcyan Chapel Committee. He was generally recognised as the "statesman of Methodism.'' He influenced tlio late Mr. Hugh Price Hughes in refercnco to tho West London Mission, and induced tiro Rev. S. F. Collier to commence his mii-sion work at Manchester. Ho was tlio inspirer of tho toward movewent in Methodism; a wise and sound counsellor, whose speeches in Wcsleyan Conforenco possessed great influence; and president of the Conference, 1893. Oil his seventieth birthday his friends presented 'him with a handsome birthday gift.
