MASTERTON NOTES.

Return's furnished to the Agricultural Department, show that there are this year 620,291 sheep in Masterton County; 190,151 in South Wairarapa; 476,955 in Keatherston, 278,403 in Akitio; .173,159 in Cnstlepoint; 81.085 in Muuriceville; and 81,787 in Ekctahuna County. This is a slight decrease on the figures for last year
HEAVY CONTINUOUS RAINS. i Masterton, J.uly 16. • t Heavy and continuous northerly rain I has been falling here for the last eigh- i teen hours, and at tho time of writing ] has every indication of continuing. Up till 9 o'clock this morning nearly two ! inches had fallen. Tho rivers and streams are in a flooded condition, and much low-. . lying, conntryi is inundated. Some'little j damage has already been done by the , washing away-of bridges and culverts', J and -it is feared _that unless the ■ rain < soon ceases extensive losses of stock- and property will result. Slips have come ' down on some of the roads in the county, ' but the main road to Castlepoint is not , obstructed, and the coach got through , this afternoon. A large area of country on the Upper Plain, Opaki, and Te pro ' Ore is under water. Settlers in the neigh-t ! bourhood of the rivers are romoving the.ii ' stock to the high country. ■ At a meeting of the Carlton Cricket Club last evening it was decided to lioldtho annual plain and fancy dress ball in the Exchange Hall on Thursday, August .15. The members of the Education Commis. eion have intimated their intention oi visiting sereral of the local schools on Thursday next. The Laradowne School Committee resolved last night to celebrate Arbor Day by the planting of forty ornamental trees in the grounds. Messrs. W. Biggs and J. Deane, who are leaving Masterton, were yesterday the recipients of valuable presents from the stall of Messrs. T. Wogg and Co., with which they have been identified for some time. The internal arrangements in the Masterton Post Office are at present undergoing important alterations. The telephone system has been extended considerably in this district of late, and further rural connections are in contemplation. , The Wningawa freezing works are being subjected to an overhaul, in view of 'lire coming season, which is expected to be the most successful in the history of the company.
