The lighter Trusty, lodeu with 50 tons of manure,-broke away from the breastwork at Port Ahuriri during the night, and drifted out into the bay, ultimately being cast up on the beach half way between the port and Petane. No one was on board, and the mishap was hot discovered till she was found high and drv. and uninjured. The vessel is owned by Captain Tonkin and Mr. Kinross White, both of Napier.. It is expected the Trusty will be refloated when the sea subsides.

YEAR'S WHEEL EVENT. Christchurch, July 16. At a meeting ol tho North Canterbury Centre of the. New Zealand Athletic anil Cycling Union last evening, it was rcrarted that the committee .had already collected upwards of .£2oo"' towards' the prize, fund for this year's Timaru to Christchurch road race, which has been set.down for September 12 whilst, judging, from further promises made, it was thought that the prize fund would reach .£3OO by Wednesday, next, when the collecting lists -will finally clrse. ■ It was resolved that the race should be handicapped conjointly by the North and South Canterbury hrindicappers,- and that entries should close on August 21.
AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD. SATISFACTORY FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Auckland, July IG. At a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Hoard this afternoon, the chairman submitted the following interim Teport on' the board's receipts and expenditure for tho past half-year:—Financial sfatement (general account) for the half-year ended 30th ultimo, shows a very satisfactory, position, there being an increase during the six months over the corresponding period of 1911 of £8939 H7s. 6d. This increase is not due to any ' extraordinary item, but is derived .from general increases arising from all sources, chief among which are the following:—Wharfage, £4511; shipping dues and port charges. £1077; electric crane dues, £683; Auckland Dock dues, .£527; storage, £1021; water, £661. Tho proportion for this period of receipts forecasted in the statement of estimated receipts and expenditure early in the year was £66,025, the actual returns to tho 30th ultimo being £66,235. In regard to shipping tonnage, the position is equally satisfactory, there being an increase of 107,376 gross tons inwards and 117,338 gross tons outwards. LABOUR TROUBLES. Greymouth, July 16. The Chamber of Commerce to-day passed a resolution congratulating Mr. 'Massey, tho Premier, on his intention to introduce legislation to deal with labour troubles. SUPPOSED DROWNING. Dunedin, July 16. It'is feared that Lionel Field, aged-21, son of the stationniaster at Waiwcra South, has been drowned in the Pomahaka River. He left home on Sunday evening to proceed to his place of'employment at Upper Olydevalc, but did not reach there; His horse has been found on an island in the river. The river was dragged to-day. About'two months ago another of Mr. Field's sons was killed at Palmerston North through a motor-car accident. BRIEF MENTION.
