THE TURF.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. FINAL WORK AT TKENTUAM. [Br Glencoe.l The conditions at Trentham yesterday were similar (o tho.se experienced on Monday, but some very inl, resting work was got through by the horses which nre. engaged to-day. Both the inside grass and the sand tracks were open, uie latter being most used. A very large number of hor.-es worked, bat, as both tracks were in use, (outing was difficult. Amongst the horses which galloped well on the grass were C; Pritchard's pair, Ceylon and Mount Victoria. They ran a half-mile separately, in allsec. and 55 sec. ' '' Peary (\V. Ryan) run five furlongs in lmin. 17Jsec, but did not finish well. Gay Lawless did not exert herself. She ran half a mile in 58»s.'c. Outward (MY Ryan) went well over a half-mile in 575.0 c. The time was not good, but the mare finished.well. Diavolo was far too good for Montiform in a half-milo spin. Mr. Neagle's horse had to be steadied several times to allow Montiform to keep abreast. Bollin and Sir Tristram went six furlongs together, the former easily holding ths old horse safe. The Highden Trial Plate candidate Neirene (G. Price) easily beat Mallard (A. Oliver) over four furlongs. The former was on the inside, and had all the' best of tho gallop. ■ . Captain Jingle will probably start as good a favourite-as anything in the big Steeplechase to-day. His half-mile yes-, terdny with Taiaha was a very pleasing effort, but the gelding walked away a little sore. . This has often been the'case previously, and tlio trouble is not likely to affect him to-day.. There is still, however, a fly in the amber, and that is shortage of work. The Hastings-trained horse has done very little since arriving here, and may be ail the better for a race. Sea Queen (W. Price) and Ngutimuru (W. Young) strodo over six furlongs very freely, but neither was extended. On the sand Mira and La Keina ran four furlongs in Msec, a gallop that was equalled byi the two-year-old Glenoid (who figures in the TrinTPlato to-day). > Hautere, Master Theory, Black Northern, and Coui:lley registered similar time. The last-named finished well in front of the latter brigade. Hautere beat Master Theory and Black Northern. The Native, Irish Rifle, and Coronetted ran seven furlongs in lmin. Msec, the first-named being beaten off. \ " An excellent ten furlongs was galloped by Goodwin Park, who looks better now than for a long time previously. He covered the journey alone, and "ran the last five furlongs in lmin. GJsec. « Crown Pearl (A. Oliver) ran five furlongs iii lmin. Gscc, movinj freely. Other horses seen out were Curator, Patriotic, Odessa, Shuja, Waipunui, Ladrone, Lcapuki, Ngatiraunui, Alexis, Beacon, Longstep, Hawick, Torbelle, Tui Cakabau Gold Bird, Armagh, 'Whimper, Soman, Knutsford, Te Rahui, Postillion, Kimila, Continuance, Sir Lethe, Paritutu, Whakaweira,-Uranium., Salute, and others. Antarctic was on the tracks yesterday morning, but was not worked. Mr. W. J!. Tuck, owner of the horse, arrived last •■•veiling, but, lit tho time of writing, it is not known if ho is to start to-day. It certainly seems to be out of the question as the gelding's action rather suggests that ho is foundered. In tho opening event at Trcntliam today solid support will be accorded Ngatiraunui who has been galloping very well since arriving at headquarters. • Of course Crown. Pearl will be favourite, and, on public form, he is entitled to the position, is'o other horse in this field has performed this season like the New Plymouth horse. Armagh and Taiaha will have a very largo following in the Hack aiid Hunters' Steeples, in which a very poor lot are engaged. Both horses hall from Elleivslie, ,'ruid are perfect fencers, arid have additional claims for support in consequence of the fact that each of them Won an open steeplechase at Gisborne. Elfish, being by Birkenhead, is regarded by many as possessing a great chance iu the Winter Hurdles. Ho is'a big, strong horse, well suited to the going, and one of the best finishers in the race. Others fancied for • the same race are Master Theory and Darby Paul. On Saturday evening, at the King's Theatre, gold .watches will.be presented to the most successful jockeys during the season closing with the Wellington Winter meeting. The watches are on view in the window of Mr. Herbert Price's shop. Yesterday a wire was received by the Racing Club cancelling the accommodation that had been engaged for Lugeon at Trentham. This means that the Otngo Steeplechase winner will not after all be a runner iu the •crosscountry events at Treiitham. Continuance was scratched yesterday for the Wellington Steeplechase, and Donzel was scratched for the Hack Steeplechase. There are twenty jumps all told in the Wellington Steeplechase course. These include two wattlo fences, ono to be jumped thrice a'nd tho other twice; a brush to be cleared thrice; a double brush to bo cleafcd onco; a sod. wall to be cleared tvyico; a log fence to be cleared twice; a post and rails to Ik cleared twice; a stone wall to be cleared twice; a water jump and a hencoop, each to bo cleared once.
