THAMES DEEP LEVELS: AN IMPORTANT ; MATTER." (By Telegraph.-l'ress Association.; Auckland, July 16. At a, meeting of the Thames Deep Levels Board a matter of. very great importance was brought up by Mr. A. Bruce as the result of -a letter from the supervisor (Mr. 0. 0. YVante), regarding the deviation, of the main crosc-cut. Mr. Warae explained that the deviation took place early in the drivins of the crosscut, but that the drive I was gradually boins brought back to its proper course. It was seen from the plan that the tunnel at a distance of 20CO feet was about 12 feet more in a hillward direction than it should be. consequently brinevnp; it nearer to the Monjiat.iiarl slide, Mr, | Bruce, in his remarks, said that this was a very serious matter, as if Hie flide was stopped it would fill the drive with mud and practically brine the whole scheme of deep levels to naught. He stated that he had conferred with Mr. E. F. Adams,: the surveyor, on this matter, nnd suggested that a prospectinc or "working' drive be put in to endeavour to locate the slide. .He characterised the possible cuttinK of the slide by the main tunnel as the worst thine that could happen to the Thames Koldftcld'-:. The chairman remarked that in his opinion the tunnel was already, within the danger zone. Mr. Bruce then moved t-hiU a working drive be put in. It was artccd that Mr. YTanie be askekd to report as to the advisability or otherwise of putting iu a prosrectine: drive to locate the main slide, and the peneral purposes committee was empowered to act if deemed advlsabla upon the report being received from Mr. Wtirne.
