MAHEKO IN TROUBLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, July 17. A very heavy Rale last niprht delayed the departure of the Jlaheno for Sydney from 11.5 o'clock till 1 a.m. The wind was so .strong that the vcieol, after leaving her berth at the Queen Street Wharf, was carried up the harhour, aud might have gone aground had not a lino been .got ashore at the Hobson Street Wharf. The gale moderating, the Maheno backed out, and steamed 'down the harbour.

TOKOMARU FROM MONTREAL. Early yesterday morning the New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Tokomaru left Auckland for Wellington. She is .en route from St. John (Canada), and is expected to arrive at this part to-morrow.

LIMITING SIZE OP STEAMERS. An interesting discussion recently took place before the International Congress of Navigation at Philadelphia as to the advisability of recording a resolution in favour of fixing a limit to tho size of ocean liners. During the debate it was decided (fays "Lloyd's Gazette") that the Titanic disaster wan not due to tho size of the ship, but that, on the contrary, 'la immense proportions prevented it from sinking more quickly. A smaller ship under the same oonoMtiona. it was argued, would have sunk like a. stone. It was furtlior declared that, the recent tragedy would have no appreciable effect in limiting the size of vc-diR and the time was not far OIT when tho Panama Canal would b? too siua'l to permit, of the ,'nfe parage of the great ship.s of the future.

COURTEIELD CHARTERED. The Tyser Line's. chartered steamer Courtilcld is due at Wellington from New York, about July 22. After completing discharge at Dunedin, the Courtflcld will ,load ore at New Caledonia'for an American port.

It is understood on tho best of authority (says the Sydney "Shipping List") that the Int'cr-Mand Company, of San Francisco, has announced the intention of purchasin" a 10,000 ton collier to carry coal from Newcastle to Honolulu in order to koCD up the stock of the company, which anticipates a big bumkering 'businoct* upon 'the opening of the Pnnama. Canal. The vessel is to be British built and register, ' and in connection with the plant at, Honolulu is the introduction of an automatic tinpler, with which to bunker the largest of vessels. ■' La Federation Maritime do Brctagne steamer Breiz llucl has been fixed to load case oil at New York for Australian or New Zealand ports. According to cable advices, the F.-S. steamer Westracath (ex Everton Grange) left Las Palmas on July 4 for Avonmouth in continuation of her voyage from Lyttclton. In about a fortnight's time the schooner M. Turner is expected to' bavc Portland, Oregon, with 1,250,000 feet of Oregon pine for Auckland. °-. The following dictum has recently been laid down by tho British House of Commons :—"Any wireless station, whether on board ship or on land, which hears 1 a distress signal is hound to • give priority to such a- message and to take such steps as the call may render necessary. It must be understood, however, that if a station is not working on the same wave length as .the ship it might not hear the signal." Leaving Auckland, in continuation of her iourney from Suva to Wellington yesterday, the Union Company's steanfer Hauroto should arrive here on Thursday evening She has about 200 ton* of fruit to land before proceeding to Westport. The collier Komata is due at Wellington from Westport this rooming. The Waipori is en route from the. West Coast port, to Lyttelton. Continuing her Souraey from Greymouth to Wellington, the Arahura left Westport at 8 p.m. yesterday. The vessel will make a call. at Nelson and Picton to-day, and is due in port to-night. , Yesterday's rain caused delay to vessels loading at Wellington. With tho exception i of one or two steamers, all tailings were postponed until to-day.
