PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Present • The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan),. Councillors 1-Mpcr, Irueman, Lodder, Cox, Brockelbank, Wakehain, List, and Short. • An application by William Clouston for an auctioneer's license was granted. Robert Walker wrote offering to sell a metal quarry at Belmont for the sum of iioOO.—Received. The clerk of the Petone Magistrates Court forwarded a statement of the fines due to the council for the quarter ending iluno 30. 'The amount recovered was The District Health Officer reported as to tho existence of cases of diphtheria, tuberculosis, and phthisis in the borough. —Keceivocl. Tho Wellington Rugby Union wrote complaining of tho lighting arrangements at the recreation ground pavilion. The union also forwarded a statement to the eftect that the Pctonc-Wollington mntch had been transferred to Petone on account of tho inter-college match at Athletic J.'nrk.—Received. Messrs. Young and Tripe, solicitors, for Messrs. D. I'ay and Co., wrote asking tho council to defer consideration of their clients' application for a fellinongerv, etc., license. The resignation of-the Borough Inspector (Mr. W. B. (iough) was received, and referred back to him for reconsideration, the council expressing its confidence in the iuspectot. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to take the statutory steps to hold a: poll of ratepayers on the question of raising loan* for the following purposes:— (1) Sewerage scheme ,£IO,OOO, including ■£(1000 for assisting ratepayers to instal house' connections; (2) waterworks loan, Ji2000; (3) town clock, JSOO. The poll will probably be biker, in about five weeks lime. On the.motion of Councillor Cox. it was resolved: "That u strong protest be forwarded from this council to the Minister for Railways in reference to the accommodalion and arrangement, of tho train leaving Petone at 7.2."i a.m." A motion by Councillor-List, to the effect that the license of » local plumber be endorsed under the requirements of Section G of the lluilders and Plumbers i liy-laws, was ruled out of order. '
