The Author of'"Ben Hur." The author of "Ben Hur" (Colonel Lew Wallace) was one of the United States' literary consuls; si were Washington Irving, Lowell, Motlev, Elihu Buiritt, Colonel John Hav, Bret Ha-rte. and Mr. Ilowells. This last author knew that if. was his little novels, and not any special consular ability, that sent him, by way of reward, to Venice; but he has always wondered what brought him away. The greatest of all the United States literary consuls was Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose work remains the flower of American fiction. He was made consul at Liverpool in 1S">;!. He hated his work there, as he had hated his official work in the American Customs; but he discharged it faithfully, being an unfailing friend of distressed ssilormen. His "English Note Books" arc full of clo?e observation, but they did not please English readers much more than Dickens's "American Notes" pleased American readers. Both saw the shady side of things too penetratingly.
Answer to "Subscriber.": Yes. it is customary to do so after the function is over. v
