Mr. Henry: Hay ward, who has just returned from a trip to England and America, has come back. with some'new ideas in theatre bujlding, and to gi vo them effect he has secured a 15 years' ease of fhe premises at present occupied by Messrs. A. .Yates and Co., in the centre of Queen Street. The new theatre will have two gallaries and will seat ICO3 people'. The new theatre will be the twenty-sixth . picture house in New Zetland controlled by Hayward's Enterprise": Ltd. ',
At a meeting of the Mount Roskill -Road Board (Auckland) ou Friday, the chairman (Mr. Chas. llagley) stated that it had been a general •opinion professionally, .Mid was supported by very marked indications, that -an underground rivM\ or re sen-oil- of .water would be found under 10 three, Kings Hills. Six months aso (lie board considered the fjuestion'of testing the correctness of this surmise, nmi it was unanimously decided to enlist tho assistance of the Rev. H. 'Mason, whive water-divining powers are' well known. Mr. Mason pointed out an area of about five square chains beneath which, lie said, water would be found anvwhere. in "rcat quantity, at a depth of about GOft. "'IV board shortly afterwards decided to employ Messrs. Sutclilfe and Mounce, «r----tesian well-borers, and arrangements wen: made for putting down a 4in. bore, the work being commenced about six wseks ago. The result of this boring wa« as follows:—The first* 10ft. bored through was loose scoria and earth, the. next lift, loos* boulders of scoria,**tucn basaltic lava scoria . (or solid rook) ; was- struck, which continued for about another 55ft. down, when perfect, clear, sparkling water was discovered. The next sft, was loose scoria fish or rock, after which- very hard, flinty rock was struck and bored into for' some, Gft.. making a total depth of bore of Sift. The water then rose 21ft. in the tore. Continuous pumping was kept up for 21 hours, at the rate of ICflO gallons per hour-from the 4in. bore, but this did not. make the slightest impression on the height of the water, and there was every indication that the supply is practically, unlimited.
Sir G. F. King Hall, Admiral of the Australasian Squadron, has reported to his Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington, further particulars regarding tho peculiar experience (reported bv cablegram) of H.Jt.S. Encounter during her passage from Auckland to .Willianistown, a few weeks-ago. It appears that on Mav 25 whilst engaged in searching for the missing dredge Jlanchester the Encounter was struck by an unusual heavy sea which the commander attributed to volcanic disturbance. Tt flooded the. after part of the ship, filled the ward room,' knocked the bottom out of the galley and did'other ■damage. The two men who were looking after the searchlights said they were nearly carried away. It is a coincidence that there was an earthquake experienced at Auckland on the previous d'.t.V.
