FEATHERSTON. At the usual monthly mooting of (ho Featherston County Council, held at Martiuborough on Friday, Mr. Alfred Matthews acted as chairman, in the absence of Mr. A. D. ITT.eod, who is away in Australia. Mr. Matthews has been for very many years a prominent member of tlio council, ami has been chairman, for several terms. A commencement has been made with (ho preparatory work in connection with the building of a Town Hall in Martinborough. As no tenders were received for work at a price within the estimates of the architect, it.has been decided to erect the building by day labour. Mr. Bowers has been appointed clerk of works. At a gathering of farmers held here recently the question of board for employees was mentioned, and one of those present said that the. cost of providing food for each employee was at least eighteen shillings per week, under the present scale of prices. CARTERTON. The first annual meeting of (he Wairarapa Past Grand Lodge of Oddfellows was held at Cartortou on i'riday night, when some twenty-eight members wero present. Bro. 1 , . Smith (president) wus in the chair. Two brethren were initiated into the Purple Degree, and throe into the Order, the I'.U.M. reading the charge. Bro. Smart gave a resume of the business done at the conference at Kkctahtina in May. The statement of finances showed a credit balance of ,E8 7s. 9d. Officers were elected as under:—Bro. Boake (Martinborough), President; Bro. .T. l\ Wallis (Greytown), Vice-President, Bro. P. Smith (Mas'erton), lecture Master; Bru. A. J. Lindop (Cartprton), Guardian; Bro. M. Maxton (Grcytown) and A. Watson (Martinborough), auditors; Committee, Bros. M'Lennan (Martinborough), J. Fenshani, (Cnrtcrton), V. Nicholson (Grcytown); Bro. T. Beaton (I'eatherston), R.S.P.; Bro. A. Sutherland (Martinborough), L.S.P.; Bro. C. J. DeLacey (Cartorton), R.S.V.P.; Bro. M'Lennan (Martinhoroug)i), L.S.V.P. A vote of condolence was ordered to be placed upon the minutes concerning the late. Bro. P. A. Erickson. A letter of condolence was ordered to be forwarded to Bro. W. Gates, Grcytown, in connection with the death of his mother. A merit board was placed in the room, and Bro. I.oasby's name will be the first to appear on it. The next meeting was fixed for tho second Thursday in October, at Featherston. This newly-elected officers were, installed, and Bro. Lonsby gavo notice of motion to move that the Wellington district be approached for the purpose of enabling the Wnirarapa P.G. Lodge to give the I'.G. N.G., and Purple. Degrees. The visitors were afterwards entertained. The annual show of the South Wairarnpa Poultry, Pigeon, and Cage Bird Association takes place at Carterton this week. Entries have been made from all parts of the North Island, while'a. number of exhibits will come from the.south.
