A-meeting of.tho Makara County Conncil was hold yesterday, Mr, J. 11. Hcßpirty. (chairman) .-presiding.. Others present wore: Councillors J. A. /Taylor, H. Eastwood, H. "'"..■' ' , In regard to the scheme* for the. widening anil improving of- the Xgahaurnima ■ Gorge, two tenders were received by Hie council for thp construction of two tun- ■ nels. Tho erection of the'.t.'tinp.ois is to . divert tho. present. course of the stream, so as. to enable, thq reclamation works -.' to bo carried-out 'at'the moro dangerous parts of the road. Neither .of the ten- * ders was .accepted, as the .council desired firetto ascertaiiv'whi>tlicr the Government :';• would, assist financially. The work, is estimated, to cost about £VM. '- ' Tho Health Departnient wrote complaining that, certain refuse, had been thrown into the .lower part of the'.Np-ahauranga, / Gorge stream. Tho council decided to refer the matter-to the Wellington Hos- / pital and Charitable Aid Board inspectors, with a request that the inspectors look into the - matter. . Tho council's " attention was drawn to tho'fabt that some of the- settlers of Newlands had allowed gorse ; to grow onthcir, land.—lt was decided to notify these settlers to removo the grow.th. ■ Tlib .Tphnsonvillc Scliool Committee wrote asking that some metal be placed on.the, approach, to the school from Hawhy Kortd. The council declined to'accede to,fho request. ~ .*.. . ■■ •'. Councillors'" Monk, Moore,* and the chairman werenppoihlod a committee.to interview the solicitors for lht> purpose of obtaining nil opinion "on thn proposed widening* of the road through Mr. William Cook's property-at Mnknrii. At present the road is 10ft. wide, and (lie owner maintains that that is hll that the public are entitled to. Tho council. ■ holds that, tlio road should be half a .. chain wide, and they consequently decided > to take , the step .indicated. . , \ ' ■
