BAILEE'S EOTJGH HANDLING. The IV. H, Talbot, which arrived at Port Chalmers on Wednesday afternoon, had an extremely rough passage from Columbia Jtiver. After being two days out she ran Into a heavy southerly gale, which lasted for several days, and then gave place to a culm, during which the sea rolled mountains high. Those on board the vesfel state that the voyage throughout was simply a succession r of violent souterly gales, alternating with occasional calms, causing the vessel to labour heavily in the hugo seas/ Tho latter broke ovor the barquentine frequently, and one ono occasion the steering gear was wrenched from the decks bodily. Fortunately, tho crew were ablo to repair the damage before the ship became unmanageable, otherwise she would have most probably lost her deck cargo. A. jib and a. topsail wore blown out of the gaskets during ono of tho gaies, and sail after sail was torn and split, cawing no end or tronblo and labour to the crew. On nearmg New Zealand heavy north-west gales were met with, and the vessel was blown off the land, several times, and all on board were very glad to make port on Wednesday, one of the crew remarking that it was tho worst trip he had ever made during his 30 years experience at sea. Of her large cargo, nearly hajf was carried on deck, and the fact of the Talbot arriving with every log intact sneaks volumes for the lashings and tho flno seagoing qualities of the vessel.

The Norwegian barque Don, which left Lyttelton on Saturday Inst for New Caledonia, was tsightod on Wednesday morning olf Kaikoura. The vessel's progress has apparently been hampered by light and contrary winds, 'bnt on/ Thursday afternoon a sfcrone southerly sprang up, and this should aid her considerably. Mr. H. Although she was off Wellington Heads at 11 a.m. yesterday, the Hnddart-Parker steamer : Victoria did not berth until nearly i 2 p.m. Thick weather was responsible for the delay. , _A steamer, bound west, passed Wellington Heads at 11 p.m. yesterday.
