ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
RECENT RAILWAY TRAGEDY. An inquest regarding the death of Robert Prior, who was run over by.a train near Tho.rndon recently, was held before Dr. M'Arthur,yesterday morning. Edward Wagner, labourer, stated he had been with deceased in the morning before the accident, and they'had: parted near the Government Buildings. Deceased had bten drinking heavily for some weeks previously, but was.sober that day. Deceased was-29 years of age, single, and, as far as was known, ; has no relatives in the Dominion. ■■■■.•' George Pearce, engine-driver, stated that as the train was running across the viaduct crossing the' Hutt Road, he had noticed a man;on the line about 200 yards ahead. He had supposed him to be the permanent , way inspector, engaged in watching • the signals and the' crossing ahead. He did not notice the deceased again until he was about a car length in front of tho engine. Deceased then threw himself across the. track. The brakeswore at .once, applied, , but the man was then : already beneath the engine. The Coroner returned a verdict of death from being run over'by_a train, deceased having thrown himself in front of it.
