, [Br "Centre-Ham."! PLEASANTRIES AT PORIRUA. , An Unfortunate Incident. Tho meeting between Hospital and Corinthians had been looked for, and had also been the subject of conversation amongst "soccer" enthusiasts in Wellington for some time proir to last Saturday. At 8.15 p.m. on the day in question theso two teams mot, and about 95 minutes later Corinthians left the field beaten by 5 goals to nil. . It is not the writer's intention to comment ou the game, because details of tho play have beon discussed during tho week by all "soccer" enthusiasts. • . • But tliero is one incident during the match of which special mention must be made.j This is tho attitude adopted by Ivcs, centre-half for Corinthians, and G'ockburn, goalkeeper for Hospital, towards each other. It appeared at one time as if Mr. Paton was about to become referee of a Johnson-Flynn encounter, as well as of a football match. No doiibt there was provocation on both sides, but still footballers should play the ,game for the game's sake: Ives has been cautioned before for this kind of thing, and Cockburn should havo known better also. It.is the first occasion on which the writer has seen the sturdy 'keeper hauled up for any such conduct, and let us hope that it will be the last. In the opinion of many, spectators who witnessed this unfortunate affair; both players might have been ordered off the field. It was, of course, practically the end. of the game, but in a question of this kind that fact makes'no difference. ■.... .
Stray Notes', ' Mr. J. Lewis has received a letter from the Wangaimi Football Association, asking him to represent them on the New Zealand Football Association. Mr: Lewjs has replied, accepting the offer. .'' Yesterday the Poverty Bay representatives passed through Wellington on their way to Christchurch, where they play Canterbury to-day. The visitors will be ba'ck-here on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday afternoon a nicked team from H.M.S. Pioneer will play the Poverty Bay representatives on Kelburne Park. Mr. H. Yeoman has been appointed referee in. the Brown Shield match Canterbury. versus Poverty Bay,, at Christchurch to-day. When the newsbecamo known, one and. nil agreed that the, New Zealand Eeferees' could not have put a better man in charge ;of the whistle. . ' ■ ', :■'■ . ' The secretary of the Auckland Football Association. (Mr. W. Ei Smithyman) iur tends/to retire from the- secretaryship. He stated that' the executive had not yet , considered his resignation, but he hoped it would do so on 1 July 9. Mr. Smithyr man has. been secretary of the W.F.A. since 1908. ' For some time previous to that he.had been assistant-secretary and i succeeded to the.secretaryship after ■ Mr. W. J. H. Reynolds was compelled to , re'signe on account of ill-health. Mr. Gdo. Adair, who has been a very energetic worker in connection with the boys' department of the A.F.A., and also the W.F.A., left.last week for America.-' While in he intends starting the game among the boys connected with, the Y.M.C.A., Mr. Adair intends to ,be iway' about nine months,'amd on his return will; be as enthusiastic'as.'ever in the work; which ho has brought to, such, a high' standard. ' . ■' . ■'■■■'■■:■/.. ' Preparations, are being made for-cele- : bratin? the 21st birthday of the association, in good style., Certain . proposals were submitted by the Finance Committeeat last Wednesday's meeting of the W.F.A; and .after discussion these were forwarded back for further, consideration. It'is understood that the tickets will be tfs.'fid;'It is the intention, of . those responsibleto make the affair worthy of the occa- , ' sion. ■ - . ■ .' ■.■'." _ From the "man in the street" comes the information that Corinthians have unearthed a good goalkeeper—a Bristol Hovers second division man. If this is correct, according to the company ho has. been' keeping he .should'be worth watching. . . ' r After last Saturday's affair at, Porirna. the Corinthians'.committee have decided .to play Ives at > ful-back—said to be his right place, .Since he has been playing m Wellington, Ives has always figuredas centre-forward. . . At a recent meeting of the W.F.A. the. secretary of the Northern Ptigby League', attended, to ask the committee for theuse of Newtown Park on certain dates." On the application-being granted, the Lpngue man was most complimentary in his remarks, arid promised, on behalf of hfy iinion, to do all sorts of things to help "soccer" alon? in Wellington. The remarks appeared to fall.like rain on a dry and parched land. Members of the Management"Committee simply drank them in. ,;,.■ ; • ■
