500-MILE RACE. A 500-mile raco between the schooner Eliza Firth ami the brigautiiie Aratapu, two of the smartest schooners on tho roast, ended in a very close finish at Lyttelton on Tuesday morning. The contost started last Friday morning off Kaipara bar, the Eliza Firth clearing harbour at. 10.10 a.m. and the Aratapu twenty minutes later. A fresh north-caster carried both enilcra down the coast in good style, and the vessels were in close company all the way to Lyttelton. Tho Aratapu got a slight load on the Eliza Firth when noariiig Cook Strait; but, n, fluke of wind put her astern of her rival. Tho Elisa Firth had a slight advantage of the Aratapu at tho finish, and entered Lyttelton Heads at an early hour yesterday moraine, the latter vessel passim; through a little later at 5.10 a.m. Both vowels made the passage in excellent time, being under four days on the trip.

TROUBLES OF A SHIPOWNER. Some mouths ago Mr. J. 11. Edwards, of Hobart, Tasmania., acquired tho schooner Joseph Sims from New Zealand owners , . After the sale was completed arrangements wero made for her to carry a cargo of pine to Melbourne from Hokiangn. instead of coming across in ballast. In due coiu'EO the vessel arrived at the lending port and eventually the cargo was loaded, but a few days before she was to sail the master began to socle a crew. In every direction he npplied for men, but bis efforts met no imrer'is, <ind consequently the vcpfpl was "tied up." .In that condition she has been for weeks. Realising that there is no immediate chance of a full complement being secured in tho Dominion, Mr. Edwardd hns therefore decided to wml a full crew from Tasmania to the vc??cl at llokianga. to navigate her to Australia. It is the only way of gelting tli-o vessel acro.-a apparently, lint what with the expense incurred in this way, added to that occasioned by the delay, will assuredly make the Joeeph Sims a "''atlier costly purchase.
