(From Our Bpeoial Correspondent!.) ■ . 6 SHANNON. There'was a good attendance in the Druids' Hall on Tuesday evening, when Mr. C. H. Gardiner presided at the weekly meeting of the Debating Society. Mr. A. Saunders moved: "That the introduction of labour-saving machinery has benefited the working classas. The motion was seconded by Mr. Selby. Mr. Heaisman opposed the motion, and was supported in his opposition by Mr. J: G. Barclay. Other speakers were Messrs. Logan, Exall, and Trainer.' ,The motion was carried by nearly a four-to-one major-, ity. Next week the item on the.syllabus is a ladies' eyejning, and the lady' members ate putting forward efforts.fo make it a success. A committee, consisting of Messrs. Gardiner, Trainer, Clayton, and Tilling, has been appointed to make arrangements in connection with the first sitting of the Supreme Court in Shannon, which takes place on July 30.

The third annual ball in connection .■with the Otaki Bowling Club was held on Tuesday night, when'visitors, were present from Paimerston, Wellington, Levin, and other towns between the centres. Tho hall was prettily decorated. The Eev. Blathwayt is at presetit on a holiday in Auckland, while Mr. Axinitagv, his assistant at the Native College, is in Nelson. ' ' • Mr. Steele, who has a record for playing tho piano continuously for 108 hours, is' at present endeavouring to beat hit, record, and to do so will finish up at midnight on Saturday. At time of writiug he is "going strongly." At a meeting of the Horowhemia Hockey Association on Wednesday evening. Messrs. D. Mackenzie, H. Nicolson, and A. M'Bain wero appointed selectors .of the team to play Wairarapa far the Nordon Cup. Mr. Nicolson was appointed manager. , A. fire, broke outin Mr. Gleeson'e store at Manakau at an early hour yesterday moining, and completely demolished the building and its contents, nothing being saved. The Town Hnll, adjoining, was also destroyed, only the piano (belonging to Mr. Manning) being saved. Mr. R. Bevan/s large motor-car was also burned. The insurance on the hall was ,£370, on the motor-car .£3OO, and on Mr. Gleeson's stock ,£IBO. The owners will be heavy loserj.
