CITY COUNCIL. TJlc fortnightly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. D. M'l/ircn) presiding. Thoro ■wore also present: Councillors It. I'letcher, G. On tho recommendation of the Finance and Property Conimittco thfc Roscncath Municipal Electors' Association aro to )» informed, in reply to the request made by a deputation from their association for improvements at Oriental Bay, that the question of improvements at the Bay is receiving tho consideration of the council It was agreed that the proposal of the Railway Department for an exchange of property at Thomdon Esplanade 'bo agreed ■ to as under:—The corporation to give the Department a strip of land, 15 feet wide, from tho Esplanade, in order to provide access to the railway hind lying to the north of the Esplanade, tho Department to give a corresponding area for garden purposes along the north side ol' tho existing garden, and to pay the cost of altering tils fence, shifting and replacing shrubs. The I'inance nnd Property Committee reported that they have been waited upon by a deputation from the executive of tho Island Bay Municipal Electors' Association to urge the committee to recommend the council to lnako provision for the completion of the Island Bay culvert this year. The committee, after consideration of the request, have to recommend that tl.e deputation be informed that the council will adhere to their decision to allocate the sum of J21250- for work on tho culvert this year.—The report was adopted. .' _ •' ■■ , • : The council approved the action of the engineer in accepting a tender for tho supply of beef slides. ' The Abattoirs Committee recommended, and it was agreed, that the Master Butch-, ers' Unioii be informed, in reply to their request for a reduction in t)i« charge for cleaning tripes, that the council cannot see their way to accede (o such request. That the fencing of the paddock at tho abattoir be carried out, and that (lie adjoining owners be called upon to pay their share of tlio cost in accordance with the provisions of the Act. That an ndditioual room bo erected at tho-caretaker's cottage at the abattoir, and that the citv engineer be authorised to have tho work proceeded with. The estimated cost is .£7O. That an offal platform be constructel at the abattoir, as recommended by tlio city, engineer, at an estimated cost of -£W.It was decided that three street lamps should bo erected at Rimu Rond, Kelburne, at an estimated cost of. ,£l7, and that.a lamp should bo erected in Hay Street, at the corner of Kilrudden Avenue, atan estimated cost of £2. The Outlying Districts Committee' recommended that the petition from owners of property at Hamilton lioad, Kilbirnie, for permission to erect their fences on the line of tho footpath as constructed shonld.be agreed to on.the following conditions :—(a) Each owner of property to pay a nominal rental of ss. per annum for tlio use of the land, (b) The owners of property to take-the necessary steps to mark the correct boundaries of their, properties in a manner.to bo approved by the city engineer, (c) The fences to Iμ set back should tho council at any time so require. The recommendation was referred back to .the committee. ..: It' was reported that the matter of the formation-of a track at Clarence ■ Street, Vogeltown, had been left iii the hands 1 of the city engineer to deal with to tho best advantage. > The council decided'to inform the Wei. lington College Governors,that the conn, cil could not undertake to assist in the clearing of the College.
