At the conclusion of play to-day South Africa required 223 runs to win, and witli only three -wickets to fall. The Africans resumed with eight wickets down for 141, Pegler (30) and Carter (12) being the batsmen. The wicket was easy. The attendance numbered three thousand. Dean and Barnes had charge of the bowling. Carter, after adding 3to his score, was brilliantly caught, left-handed, by Dean at point, off Barnes. Nine for 146. Ward was bowled before ho 6cored, and Pegler Carried his bat for 35, made in ■ fiftv minutes. The whole innings lasted 160 minutes. Rhodes and Hobbs began England s secend innings, to the bowling of'Nourse and Pegler. Nourse was troublesome, but Hobbs, in splendid'form, punished Pegler. There was some smart running between Rhodes, after scoring ten in forty minutes, played back to Pegler, and wa9 clean bowled. Pegler with this wickot secured his hundredth for tho season. Onofor'46.
