The adjourned meeting of the creditors in the estate of Mr. A. N. Williams, plumber, was held yesterday, Mr. A. Simpson (Official Assignee) presiding. After discussion, it was decided to' call tenders for the purchase of. the stock.

It was announced in the Court of Appeal a couple of days ago that tho cose of tho Minister for Customs v. the Waihi Goldmining Company would not be argued. Yesterday, however, Air. H. H, Ostler, of the Crown Law Office, stated that the arrangement now was that argument would take place, Mr, C. B. Morison appearing for tho company. Mr. Ostler stated that ho had been instructed by tho Solicitor-General to ask if tho case could follow the two Clown cases on Friday. The Court agreed to this course.

The fortnightly meeting of the Webb Street Literary and Social Club was li«ld oh Tuesday evening, tho Rev. J. Dawson occupying the chair. A lectnro on Yorkshire was delivered by the Rev.' W. S. Potter. Mr. .T. H. Helliwell also gavo Beveral readings in. tho Yorkshire dialect.

A conference of officors of the Defence Forces of New Zealand wos opened at the Garrison Ilall, Buckle Street, yesterday morning. Major-General Godley .is presiding. ■

It. is expected that, the Cost of Living Commission will complete the taking of evidonce in Wellington on Thursday. The intention is then to adjourn for a- week or two in order that, the evidenoo may be printed and tabulated. Members of the Commission will then sit, probably for about a week, in order to deliberate and draw up their report.

The Committee set up by the House of Representatives to consider the question of privilege raised by Mr. R. M Galium, momber for Wairau, met yesterday morning. The Hon. T. Mackenzie was appointed chairman. Mr. C. P. Skenrctt, IC.C., appeared for Mr. M'Callum. The committee decided that its proceedings should bo open to the press, and then adjourned to enable the chairman to obtain tho opinion of Mr. Speaker regarding tho scope of its inquiry. When the House met yesterday, Mr. Mackenzie sought and obtained an extension of time for the committee until August 7. Tho next meeting will be held on August 1.

An estimate of the cost of installing automatic telephones in Noir Zealand was given to a reporter .by the retiring Postmaster-General yesterday morning. Mr. Ell said that he had approved the recommendations of the Departmental officers that the system should be adopted, and it was for the lieiV Cabinet to decide whether the expenditure should he undertaken.
