Thousands of Republican office-holders throughout the United States aro petitioning Mr. Taft to withdraw his candidature for tho Presidency, as they fear a split in the party, which would, he certain to give tho Democrats victory. Mr. Roosevelt is not in favour of tho petition, but suggests that tho party should agree to run a compromise candidate.
