BOXING.
JOHNSON MAY COME OUT. The following cablegram was received in Sydney late last week:— "Las Vegas (New Mexico), Wednesday.— Mr. 11. D. M'intosh, of Sydney, has written to Jack Johnson, offering him .£GOOO for a bout, to be fought in Australia in 1913. "The antagonist's name is not mentioned, but he is believed to l>c Langford. Johnson lias not decided whether to accept." Mr. M'intosh has something big in view, and will pull it off if Johnson consents. Langford is to be the other party to the fray, which is not (o take place in Australia, though Australians may not have to go far to witness it. More than has been stated Mr. M'intosh refuses to divulge; he simply says, "Wait." Everybody may depend upon knowing everything when plans are ripe—that is, of course, if Johnson sends a favourable reply, and th« proprietor, of the Stadium is very sanguine .about brinj able to land his man.—"Sydney Referee." ACCIDENT TO RUSSELL. An accident at the Brisbane_ Gymnasium on June 27 upset tho Iwxinpr world of Queensland generally. • Russell and Klliott were training together, the one for Sullivan on Saturday, June 29, and the other for Arthur Douglas, the Saturday following, and they were putting in a lively bout.. tho liust Russell was to ■ hnve. Tho Brisbane boy had both foet well planted, and was sending a short right drive, when Elliott dropped his head to the blow, and the meetinir of head and knuckles resulted in breaking a bone in the back of Russell's hand. Medical attendance 'was at onco obtained. Dr. Marks discovering the nature of an injury, and giving Russell a certificate to the effect that a bone was fractured, and it would be some weks before ho could hone to fight again. Elliott took Russell's place- against Sullivan, the ooutest going the full 211-rounds, the arrangement being "no decision" except in case of a knock-out.
