A HOT PARTY FIGHT.
BRITISH BY-ELECTIONS, LIBERALS RAISE LAND ISSUE, By Teleera.ph-Prees Aesociation-CopyrfKht London, July 7. Mr. E. L. Outhwnite, who has been adopted by Hanley Liberals as their candidate, is basing his campaign on the taxation of land values. Practically his chief supporters,are a band of enthusiastic members of the House of Commons, including Mr. Alexander Ure, Lord Advocate of Scotland, nnd Mr. J. C. Wedgwood, M.P. for Newcastle-under-Lyme. Mr. Outhwaite, however, has aToused no enthusiasm, and it is possible he will not bo nominated for the seat after all. Twelve Parliamentary members of the Lsbour party ere to epeak on Monday on behalf of Mr. Finuey (president of the' local Miners' Association), who ' is the party candidate.
Nine Unionist members of the House of Commons are supporting Mr. G. H. Eittner, who was defeated for the 6eat by the late Mr. Enoch Edwards at tho last election. Tho Labour party has selected Mr. Holmes, a barrister, as ite candidate for the Crewo seat, against Mr. Harold lUnphy (Liberal) and Mr. Ernest Craig (Unionist). LABOUE LEADEES PEOTEST. (Eeo. July 9, 0.40 a.m.) London, July 8. Mr. W. Anderson, chairman, of the In : dependent Labour. Party,- in a speech at Wigston, referred to the Crewo and Hanley by-elections, and protested at a small section of the Liberals for seeking to- impose all burdens on the unearned increment from land, and remove the burdens from the unearned income of capital.
