DRAUGHT HORSE KILLED.
RAN DOWN BY A DOUBLE-DECKER.
An accident resulting in tho death of a fiuo draught horso occurred in Coustablo Street at 2.50 p.m. on Saturday. lho floras was being led down tho street by, Mr. Charles Guthrie, the owner, a carrier by trade, who controlled it .by moans of a halter, when it becaino restive and commenced prancing about in a playful manner. In its cavortiugs it got (in to tho tram-track, and seeing a car (decker No. 10) coining down tho hill at a good rate of speed, Mr. Guthrie, who still had a tight hold of tho halter, tried to pull the .beast off tho track, which only seemed to raako it the more obstini at S, ,a paying there The car cnino along without any apparent slackening of speed, and crashed into tho horse, which took the impact sideways, carried it along the track for over 20ft. and then threw it to ono sido with a grinding smash. On being examined it was at once seen that .tho horse was badly injured. It could not stand on its'hind legs, and it was supposed that ono or both of its hips wero broken, besides which it sustained serious internal injuries. The horso died within half an hour. The car was driven by Motorinan Parker, who, on being questioned, stated that he applied the brake as soon, as he saw the horso on the track, but it was too late to stop tho way on the car. The front of the car was dented and tho catcher was smashed. There will be a Denartmental inquiry into the affair.
