NOTES ON THE RACING. VBy Teloerarh—SnociaJ Oorrejpondent.l on. r,- t « . G ' s borne, July 5. The Gisborne Bacmg Club's meeHne concluded m similar weather conditions to thoso on the opening day. Tho attends anco was large, as on tho first day, but tlio racing over tho fences was njraia disappointing A feature of tie meeting was the phenomenal success of the cross, country ndor A MTlinn, who rode five winners out of five mounts over fences, and had it not boon for a difference with the trainer of Armagh 'he would also have ridden the hor.se when he won tho lauranganm Hack Steeples. Paisano and Master Theory were very evenly backed in tho.Open Hurdles, the actual fovoiinte being in doubt right up till closing time. The other runners did not have their chances fancied in anvthmg like tho same terms as this pair Master lheory was sour at the start, and B \ ve , - llr - /• Woods a lot of double to Bet him off on even terms with the field, llie nrst fence he again jumped badly, but after that his topping" improved .considerably. Game fell at the second fence, where Baldos ran off. Master Iheory then took charge, and was only headed once afterwards. This was two fences from home, where he ran out, and Paisnno got up on the inside. The top weights victory wa» now proclaimed, but Master Iheory cut out badly, tho littlo fellow had enough pace to again reach Paisano and beat him by a neck. It was a fine finish, and tho public cheered loudly. The top weight ran his best raco so far this season, and seems to bo coming back to form. Several private .watches made the timo of tho raco two seconds faster than that officially recorded.
Early Percy (Mahaki-Crackshot marc), ft horso that hud a great private reputation when trained at Awnpuni, upset a warm favourite in St. Helena, who was backed down to a very short price to win t\io Maiden Hack. Tho favourite had the services of Deoley, but was slow to move, whilo Larly Percy, who had delayed the start by playing up, was on his toes and got out with a break. St. Helena and Jlcrrunas were close up at tho finish, but could not Teach tho Jfahaki gelding, who won by a neck after one of tho prettiest races of the meeting. La Reina duly, inado good to-day. Eeid handled her perfectly, and slipped up on tho rails as tho loaders ran into the straight. She may have been a better mare to-day, as it is reported that since arriving at Gisborne sho did not do much work on tho tracks. Sylverlvte, as usual, mado tho pace solid, with Leahora and Ballyshannon alongside him. Tho favourite ran through on tho insido at tho turn, where the whole field was bundled, and won nicely from Sylvcrlyte, with Cullinan finishing fast in third place and tho others close up. ' Tho candidates in tho To Hapapa Steeples, with tho exception of Taiaha, fell over liko ninepins, and tho horse named won by half a mile. This mado tho fifth successive win scored by A. M'Flinn, and now places him at tho head of the list of winning riders. To-day ho got off Armagh to ride Taiaha, nnd "the public took tho tip and followed the luekv rider. Passing tho stand the first time," Bonnie Jean fell, and Quandary baulked. The former was stopped, but tho latter went to the next fence, and was then pulled up. With a milo gono, Tui Cakabau was in behind Taiaha, and was jumping much bettor to-day. Tho pair ran well clear of Armagh, and, <it tho bottom, tho last-named, who was very soro, ran off. Passing the stand the second time the two leaders wore together, and continued so (o tho fence where Armagh ran off. This brought disaster to Tui Cakabau. Meamvliilo Armagh had been ridden, but at tho stand he was stopped by order of his owner. This was immediately countermanded when Tui Cakabau fell, and Armagh set out to. do tho last mile nnd earn second money. Tui Cakabau was caught by au outsider nnd trotted back to tho jockey, who jumped into tho Kiddle nnd completed the course half a mile ahead of Armagh. It is not often that li. Deeley rides a winner tlint is uufaneied bv tho public, but this was tho enso in the Second Hack Flat, when, after a vigorous finish, lie drove Kiainff Sun hpmo by n now from . Amaru, with. Gihtt Emqp, a Wtfefifith,
baok, and tho othora In straggling order. Calier Davon was not • tvoll placed in tho early part of tho race, but lie quickly went to the front, and led into the straight. St. Helona, Amaru, and Kising Sun all challenged then, and the verdict went to tlio last-named by a nose. Sylverlyte, who was making lus second appearance, was lost off, and ran in tho rear tho whole way. After tho race Wee Rose was sold to Mr. Sclby for SG guineas. Armagh and Uonnio Jean, woro raddled up again in tho Hack Stoeplcs, nnd the former scored easily from tho little chestnut mare. Tho latter seemed to have lightened np a good deal, and did not show the clash which she exhibited on tho first day. My Motor fell at tho first fence, and his rider, Olson, was cut about tho face nnd arms. To Kalnii also fell, but his rider was uninjured. After the scratching pen had been freely used, six runners were left in the concluding event. Tho totalisator showed the first day's winner (Admiral Soult) to bo a warm favourite, and ho won very easily.
