Hornby won the toss and put tho Australians in, Kelleway and Jennings opened against Dean and Huddloston. An unfortunate start was made, Kelleway, with the score 7, snicking Dean to J. Tyldesley in the slips. Ono for 7. Macartney was next, and ho and Jennings raised the score to 42, when Macartney, playing back to Huddleston, v. as I clean bowled. He had not played with his usual certainty. Jennings, who was caught by Hornby, off Dean, got 30 mns in sixty-five minutes. The bright spot in tho innings was tho partnership of Bardsley and Gregory. Tho pair added 70 for the fourth wicket. Bardsley, who was of ton beaten, gave a chnnoo at 19, but he mado (several good pulls. Gregory hit up 53 in 100 minutes by good all-round play. His score included 6ii 4's. Tho batsman gavq threo chances, Tho remainder of the side found the bowling too superior. The runs wcra got as follow: Fifty in forty-fivo minutes, tho century in ninety-five minutes, i>nd 183 in 170 minutes. Makepeaco and Spooner began for the County, Whitty and Kelleway bowling. Makepeace, before he had scored, was out to a good catch by Macartney, off Witty at mid-off. Spoonor ('l4), after some good driving, was held by Smith at long-on off n lofty drive—a well-judged catch. Tho retiring batsman had batted for an hour. Sharp got a i off the lost ball of liio day. Ho scored 50 in a hundred minutes, and gavo a chanco at 30. Fifty was hoisted in forty minutes, and the century in ono hundred and five minutes.

Sharp's partner, E. Tyldosley, ia 22 not out.
