Captain Shannon, of the 16th Lancors (Queen's), lato A.D.C. to his Excellency tho Governor, left for Sydney by tho Warrimoo last evening, to connect thero with the P. and O. steamer Moldavia for London. Captain Shannon's successor has not yet been appointed.
Mr. W. 11. Walton, whois well known as a lay evangelist in Welliuglon, has been appointed to assist in St. Thomas's parochial district. Mr. Walton will talto charge of Berhampore, and commences his work by preaching in St. Cuthbert's Churchroom, Pnllu Grove, on Sunday evening.

Mr. John Patterson, late manager of the slip in Evans Bay for tho Wellington Patent Slip Company, who retired from tho service somo littlo time ago, has been made a handsome presentation by the staff. Mr. Patterson, who has been thirty-five years in the employ of the company, was given a substantial allowance on his retirement. His successor is Mr. John Uanioll, for many years repairs foreman in Wellington for tho Union Steamship Company.
Mr. Justioo Cooper leaves for Wanganui ou Monday to complete hearing of Supreme Court business.
At a meeting of tho Board of Nominators for the purpose of nominating a successor to Airchdcncon Stacker, who has announced his retirement from tho chargo of St. John's Church, lnvercargill, it was decided to recommend tho Rev. Horac6 Packe, M.A., at present vicar of Queonstowu, for the vacant position. The nomination will bo sent to tho Primate for confirmation forthwith, but as Archdeacon Slockor does not relinquish his charge till tho end of the year, the appointment will not take effcot until then.
A Press Association telegram from Blenheim states:—Mr. J. Duncan, ex-membor for Wairau, was entertained by his supporters at a banquet on Thursday night, and presented with an illuminated address. Mrs. Duncan was presented with a silver rose bowl.
In pursuance of a determination recently announced tho Government has appointed two doctors, iono of them a, lady, to make a medical inspection of school children. The lady appointed is Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, of Wellington, tho daughter of Mr. Wan. Gunn, of Timaru. I ho other appointment has been conferred on Dr. Thomas, of Timaru. Mr. W. W. do Castro, late Deputy Land Registrar of Nelson, who has bean transferred to Invercargill, passed through Wellington yesterday. Prior to leaving Aelson he was the recipient of several presentations, indicative of tho high esteem in which (ho recipient was held both in his official and social capacities. _Mr. Peter Muir, late secretary of tho Tailors Union, left Wellington yesterday lor Sydney. Before his departure, fel-low-secretaries in tho Trades Hall met, and presented Mr. Muir with a handsome silver shaving set, suitably inscribed, as a token of friendship. Mr. Reardon made tho presentation, and spoko of the assistance given to the Labour movement bv Mr. Muir. J On Thursday evening Mr. E. Toms, of Palmei'ston North, a traveller for Messrs. A social gathering of membors of tho Wellington Keld Staff of (ho Colonial Mutual Lifo Society was held on Thursday evening, at tho residence of tho Chief Superintendent for New Zealand, Mr. E. T. Wray, tho occasion being a welcome to Mr. R. B. Clark, who has been appointed local superintendent; also (o welcome two visiting inspectors, Messrs. A. R. Stow and S. J. Edkins, who are at present in New Zealand engaged in special development work. Brief speeches ot welcome and appreciation wore given by Mr. P. D. Leslie, tho Resident Secretary of tho society, Mr. 11. IT. Rouse, AssistantResident Secretary, and Mr. 13. T. Wrav, Chief Superintendent, and responded to by tho gentlemen referred to. Vocal and instrumental music vros indulged in during tho evening, and the proceedings were marked with tho greatest enthusiasm. Mr. H. Blick was a welcome guest at .tho gathering, a-nd presided at tho i.iano. A private cable messago has been re- y ceivod stating that Mr. Thomas Harrison Horrax, son of tho late Mr. John Horrax. of Karon, has passed his final examination in tnodicino at Edinburgh University, where ho has been studying for tho kst four and a half years. On tho motion of Archdeacon Cassell, the Wellington Diqeesan Synod, by resolution yesterday, placed on record its sympathy with tho rclntivcs of tho late Mr. W. Swadliug, synodsnion for Opunako, and its appreciation of tho services ho rendered to tho Church in a remoto country district. Mr. W. W. do Castro, Doputy Land Registrar at Nelson, who has been transferred to Invercargill, was entertained Inst week at tho Commercial Hotel by tho Nelson Law Society, and presented 'with a silver tea and coffee service.
