A'number of new railway carriages havo been "turned out from the AJdinjton Workshops recently, and several aro in uso on the local section of the railway. A feature of a number of tho new secondclass carriages is that they have been fitted with chair seats made on the typo of the old first-class chairs. Passengers travelling second cluss on long distance journeys will appreciate the improvement.
Tho installation of steam heaters apparatus in railway carriages is being pushed on with at tho Addington Workshops, and within a week or two tho express trains between Duneciin and Christchurch will bo ablo to dispense with footwurmers. The steam from the locomotive is run through a pipo the wholo length of (ho train, tho pressure being reduced to 3011). Thero is a radiator in each compartment and each Tadiator is fitted with a handle which enables tho operator to regulate tho temperature, tho condition of which is indicated by a thermometer. The system has already been in operation on the North Island railways and its introduction here during the winter is timely. The new locomotives now Ileitis; 'built nt Addington aro being fitted with superheater boilers, by which tho steam, after being raised, is heated to a temperature of about CO degrees. A number of these locomotive* aro now working and excellent results havo been obtained from them.
