Tho prime cause of his (roubles was the extreme scarcity of fish. He had a steam trawler, he was sorry to say, and he had lost something liko ,£I7OO in two years. Despite that, he had to keep going,' for fish he must liavo, as his reputation as purveyor was at stake. The prico of fish to liim had doubled, but ho was not ablo to "pass it on" to his customers, ami had never done so. All lie could do was to take advantage of a glut of fish, buy cheap, and send (he overflow of tho finny treasures to the freezer. Two local auctioneers conducted fish sales in Wellington; anybody could bid, aad tho fish could be purchased in any quantity dosired—dealers would not run up the prico if single fish were bid for. During tho last three months, tho prices had been high, and (ho flat fish were never low in price. Tho public iusisloil on having flounders. Thero. were also other factors —railway freights, losses in transit, high rents, which contributed to his difficulties. '
