WINTER CARNIVAL.

Yesterday afternoon, at the Y.M.C.A. rooms, Iho winter carnival arranged by tho Ladies' Auxiliary of tho Y.M.C.A. was formally opened bv Mr. J. G. W. Aitkon. hi addressing those present," Mr.' Aitkcn referred in very eulogistic terms to tho good work performed bv the auxiliary, and' wisheil tho carnival everv success. There was a large n( tendance of people present, who interested themselves m the numerous and various stalls. Each of tho latter was proth'ly decorated, and those in charge 'had very mnnv clients to attend to.

The stalls woro in charge of tho following ladies:—Produce, Mrs. Campbell, assisted by Mflsdam»s Kitto -and Groig, and Miss l'osselle. Hook-Miss Palpi), assistants Miss Bertenshaw and Mrs. Dumbell. Plain skill—Mrs. Pottle, assistants Mosdamcs Bennett mid Low. Fancy stall—.Mrs. Ilofl, assistants Mesdiuncs Ralph, Cooke, Watorhouso, and Misses Scott: and Hutch. Sweets—Mrs. Kelly, assistant Miss E. ]<Ast: oveninif several side-shows wcro in full swing. The Old Hoys' Club gavo a nigger minstrel entertainment, which was much appreciated. A game of basketball was another of the side-shows, the contestants being in fancy dress. Professor A. La, tho "great hypnotist," amused liis audience, for quite a while. A number of musical ilcms were contributed, and altogether a very onjnyahlo evening's entertainment was provided. Tho carnival will bo open this afternoon, and in the evening, when the side-shows will be repeated. After 7 p.m. a charge of (Id. admission is made.
