AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.
VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT OPENS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. July 3, 8.55 p.m.) Melbourne, July 3. The State Parliament has opened.- The Governor's Speech referred ito the general prosperity and marked progress of land settlement, and the increasing demand for irrigated land. Bills were promised for /rater storage, and tho building of railways in arid areas; the electrification■ of the suburban railways; the development of ports outsido Melbourne to assist in decentralisation; the compulsory acquisition of land for closer settlement; and municipal unimproved land value taxation.
QUEENSLAND PROGRAMME. (Rec July 3, 10 p.m.) Brisbane, July 3. Parliament lias opened. The Governor's Speech referred to the strike, and foreshadowed legislation to dgal with possible future outbreaks. It was intimated that it would be necessary to float a loan in London at an early date. The measures promised included an amended Liquor Bill, an Industrial Peace Bill, and the provision of liberal assistance for mining development.
