Sift flour, baking powder, and salt, chop the suet line, ami mix with the Hour; add the sugar, stoned and chopped dates, and grated nutmeg; beat the, egg and milk together, and pour into the dry ingredients, making a dough; put on to'a floured cloth, tio securely, leavin» room to swell; plunge into boiling water, and boil two hours; lift out, tarn out on to a cloth on a hot dish; serve with' sweet sauce.

Ward yesterday afternoon, at her home in Molesworth Street, Quantities of spring flowers decorated the draw-ing-room, predominant among them being large bowls fitted with golden wattle and the tinted ' foliage of the Now Zealand birch, while in the dining-room, where, tea and coffee were served, were violets, and spring bulbs, as well as wattle. Jlrs. Ward wore a very pretty soft, black dress with touches of emerald green upon it; Ucr mother, Mrs. Fitzgerald, was present, and was also in black, with a black plumed hat. Among the guests were: Mrs. C. Johnston, Mrs. Menzics, Mrs. Godley, Miss Johnston, Mrs. W. Turnbnll, Miss Eeoves (Christchurch), Mrs. and Miss Barron, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Brnudon, Mrs. F. M. B. "Guide Maggie's" Marriage. Says a l'rcss Association message from Auckland:—Acconlina lo letters just received in Auckland, the marriage of Magisio Papakura, the guide, to Mr. Staples Brown, of U Harrington Gardens, London, S.W., and Oxfordshire, took placo in London on May 14. It is more than probable that Mr. and" Mrs. Staples Brown will come out to New Zealand and take np their residence here. Danoe at Now Century Hall. The annual danco of the employees of Messrs. John Dnthie nnd Co. took placo in the. New Century Hall last night. The hall was very prettily decorated, and there were a large number present. Among these were: Miss Hill, who wore a palo pink chaimeuse dress; Miss M'Donald, white satin with pink overdress; Mrs, Forkins, black velvet; Miss Haskell, white satin with overdress of jewelled chiffon; Miss Park, pretty muslin dress; Miss Mackenzie, pale blue satin with black overdress; Miss Mace, cream crystalline; Miss Gow, pale blue silk with ni'iion overdress; Miss Armstrong, white silk with lace facings; Miss Carr-Mich.iil, wliito satin. The committee, comprised Messrs. Hardie, Harper, Ritchie, Turnbull, and Lnurenson; and Misses Crawford, Haskell. Hill, Mace. Mackenzie, and Park. The M.C.'s were Messrs. Turnbull and Hardie. The music was supplied by Mr. Clifford Baker. Among tho=o present was Mr. John Duthie, jun.
Now Zealand Composer's Success, Writes tho British Australasian-.-"The Pool," lit the Alhambra, won instant appreciation from press and public, and ■great crowds are (locking to see tho beautiful "wordless 'medieval idyll," which was presented on May 21, and for which Mr. G. H. .Clutsam, the New- Zealand composer, has provided the music.' Naturally, Antipodcnns, especially Now Zenlandcrs, have formed a large part cf the audience, for their countryman ha.s scored a big success, .and all are anxious to note his triumph for themselves. Mr. Clutsam had not been in the Old Conntry very long before ho made a mark in the musical world with his opera, "A Summer Night,!' v or f o ™°d by Mr. Beecham. Nt His Majesty's, and his opera, "King Harlequin.," 1 which "was performed in Berlin, nt the Kurfurstan Onara House. He is also Known as the author of "Songsi from, the Turkish Hills," and in "The" Pool" he has gripped the public taste in a phenomenal manner. Passing of an Old Settler. Early yesterday morning there pas=ed away, "nt'her residence at Awahuri (Feilding)* Mrs. Whisker, one of the earliest settlers of the district. Mrs. Whisker, who was a daughter of Mr. Hughie, was n native of the Hutt, where she was also married, nor husband died some 13 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Whisker came to this district (writes .our Feilding correspondent) in 1846, settling on the property whore their home still stands, and which has been the birth-place of their eleven children, nine of whom arc now living. During the troublous times of the Maori War, Mrs. Whisker was the only white woman on this side of the Enngitikoi outside the redoubt nt Bulls, and many a time, receiving warning from friendly Natives, she and her family had to leave the house and hide in tho scrub and ilax till the dangerous Natives had passed by. This was during 1806, when inter-tribal lighting, as well as war with the Europeans, was proceeding all round the district. Mrs. Whisker was regarded as a doctor by the Natives, who sought her aid when wounded, and knew that her sympathetic heart would not refuse them. Mrs. Whisker leaves a family of two daughters, seven sons, ami seventeen grandchildren-Mrs Nairn (Eaetiln), Mrs. Mercer (Feilding), and Messrs. Vi illiam (at home), Jack (Carnarvon), Bealtio (Thames)', Duncan (Awahuri), Dave (Feilding), Robert (Feilding), and Wattle (at home).

The Sisters of St. Joseph, Wangaivui, took possession of their beautiful new convent on Tuesday. A Maori of Long Lineage. Mr. P. Paora-Chambcrlin, of ToWhaili-nui-a-Toi, , who was presented to His Majesty the King by the Earl of Seafield at the. second lovco of this sea'-on, held on March 11, at St, James's Palace, says an Encrlish writer, is the eldest son of Paora Hira, of Manganeahi, New Zealand, and his wife Powhiri, and , (ho adonted son of Mr. T. Clia.mberlin Chamberlin. Ho holds lands at Te Whaili-nui-a-Toi, and elsewhere. Through his father he is thirtieth in direct descent from the srent Moriori chief 'JVi-lcai-rakan, an Ariki, who lived at To "Whniti in ancient times, and whoso ancestor, 'ho chief Maku. came over in the Ara-tau-whaiti, which was probably the first oiioo to arrive at New Zealand from Hawaii, about A.D. 850. From his mother he is lineally descended from Toronto and Mahinarangi, the parents of Monianoto, from whom the Ngati Maniapoto tako their name. The death occurred at her daughter's (Mr. E. C. Sim's) residence, 57 Austin Street, on Tuesday, of Mrs. Gvainev. The deceased was the daughter of tho late Mr. William Shearer, an old New Zealand whaler, and she was born at the whaling station on Kapiti Island. Mrs. Grainey, who was the widow- of the late Mr. W. 11. Grainey, was 73 years of age. The directors of tho Wellington Bowling Club have issued invitations to a social evening, io be held in the pavilion .on Wednesday evening next.

Tho marriage took place on Tuesday afternoon at Feilding of Miss Nellie Desmond, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marsh Desmond, of Kimbolton' Bond, and Mr. W. Milner. of Hiwinui. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a cream cloth costume, nnd a black hat lined with hlue. Miss Chappell attended her as bridesmaid, and Mr. Martin Desmond was the best mill. The Eev. Innes Jones conducted the servico. Mr. n. M. Campbell. M.P., and Mrs. Campbell are staying at the Eoyal Oak. Miss Fenwick (Dunedin)is in Wellington, and is staying with Mrs. H. Blundell. Mrs. Menzics and Mrs. Newman arrived in Wellington yesterday on their return from their visit to Sydney. Mrs. and Miss M'Dougall, who have, been spending some weeks in Sydney, arrived in Wellington by the Maunganui yesterday, and leave later for Pirinoa. Mrs. Salniond loaves for England by the Tainui. Miss Butts gave a very pleasant little tea in Miss Tcndall's tea-rooms yesterday for Mrs. Salmoml. This afternoon, the first Thursday of the month, is "Club Afternoon" of the Pioneer Club, and members will have tho opportunity of bidding farewell to Mr.-:. Salmoml, 'who is leaving on a visit to England.
Our Mastorton correspondent states that Mr. Herbert Sutton, second son of Mr. Charles Sutton, of Teawlia, was married yesterday to Miss Ethel Hart, eldest daughter of Mr. John Hart, an old settler of the Wairarapa.
On Tuesday evening Miss Eosina Buckman was tendered a farewell concort in New Plymouth, where her people reside. Tho audience was large and enthusiastic. Miss Buckman was in splendid voice, and aroused enthusiasm in her singing of "So Saran Eose" and Mimi's song from "La Boheme." Miss Buckman leaves Auckland for Sydney on Monday next.
